I am an LCSW with over 20 years experience as a front line clinician, supervisor and manager in the fields of substance use and addiction. I have learned over the years to take a flexible approach to patients, to "meet you where you're at." Every patient is unique, and my way of working with you is to collaborate on a treatment plan that addresses the issues that are of primary importance to you. Although I have learned a number of different approaches over the years, the therapy I provide has as its basis respect and a valuing of your unique strengths and gifts.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

During a normal session I listen more than I speak. In a first session, I am likely to ask more questions than usual in order to get information about you that will help me to better understand your situation and what you're hoping to achieve in therapy. By the end of the first session, if we both agree to continue working with one another, we will have at least the beginning of a a roadmap for our work together, which can then be changed or expanded to meet your evolving needs.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I have learned over the years to establish safety as a first goal in treatment. I am warm, empathetic and accepting. Therapy is all about you and what you want and need, and I meet patients where they happen to be at any particular moment. I believe that therapy is a two-way relationship, and I encourage my patients to give me feedback if something is not working for them. Finally, I have been accused by colleagues (and quite a number of my patients) of having a good sense of humor.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Given my background in treating people with mental illness and/or addiction, I have found Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to be very valuable to patients in helping them monitor and change their hurtful thoughts, thereby helping them to successfully cope with conditions such as depression and anxiety, as well as low self-esteem.

Eclectic

In addition to CBT (see above), my philosophy of therapy is to engage in a number of different approaches that will help patients to lead happier, more fulfilling lives. These include Interpersonal Therapy, Mindfulness, and Motivational Interviewing. Your treatment is customized to you and your needs. In other words, I am flexible in my approach.
