Hello and welcome! First, I'd like to acknowledge the courage it takes to seek support. Way to show yourself some love and care! My name is Daniel and I am a board licensed therapist in Oakland, CA with 20 years of experience, including training and supervision of other therapists. I use Internal Family Systems and other therapies to treat major depression, anxiety, and the many effects of traumatic life experiences. If you are stuck and want to try a non-traditional approach, I also offer a safe, proven, psychedelic treatment called Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy, which boosts your brain's ability to get out of depressive ruts and form new habits. With an experienced therapist in your corner and the discovery of new, promising treatments, you can face life's challenges with a renewed sense of hope. We will work together to discover deeper meaning and purpose and reclaim the joy and belonging that you deserve. If you are struggling with addiction but feel unsure about traditional approaches like 12-step groups, rehabs, or even total abstinence, you're not alone. Many people want to make a change but don't seek help because they feel this way. I specialize in reducing addictive behaviors by addressing the thoughts, feelings, and beliefs that make you want to escape and by discovering what really motivates you. My goal is to help you recognize your strengths, what's working and what's not about your use, and replacing harmful behaviors with more meaning and joy. I'm here to be in your corner, as an ally and as a guide. Together, we'll create a supportive, non-judgmental space where EVERY part of you is welcome. If you're ready to learn how to come home to yourself, I invite you to reach out. Let’s talk about how we can get there together.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

Our first sessions will be focused on getting to know each other, building trust, seeing whether we are good fit for each other. I want to hear your story, what brings you to therapy, and what you hope to achieve. I will explain the way that I work and what our collaborative process will look like. I'll also be able to answer any questions you might have for me.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I am a seasoned clinician with 25 years in the mental health field, bringing to therapy not only treatment expertise and nuance, but a broad base of experience and wisdom in business, life, parenting, adventure, and play. I've provided training and clinical supervision for dozens of therapists working to get licensed, as well as to community mental health programs. My mission as a consultant has been to champion and improve strength-based, person-centered mental health care in the community. My passion as a therapist is witnessing the kindness and strength in all of us humans...the power we have to heal ourselves and thus heal others... and what we can do when we are truly seen and heard for our best intentions.

My treatment methods

Acceptance and commitment (ACT)

ACT is an effective approach for a wide variety of life challenges including anxiety, depression, relationship issues, chronic pain, and others. If you are open to learning and to taking some manageable steps towards changing the way you approach adversity, ACT can help you improve things pretty quickly. As a therapist, a central strength of mine is fostering and nurturing your trust and a feeling of safety when we're together. Our goal will be for you to feel comfortable brining all of who you are into our supportive sessions. Healing is about having someone in your corner no matter what come up. When the time is right we'll practice methods that help you to manage your thoughts and feelings so that they are serving rather then hindering you. In ACT we acknowledge that life always involves some challenges and some pain, but that we can learn how to respond to these more mindfully and reduce the suffering that they bring.

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

If you haven't check out the book "No Bad Parts" by Richard Schwartz, I highly recommend it (in audio form, if possible) for a couple of reasons: One is that it provides a warm and hope-inducing introduction to what this approach is all about and the basic ideas and beliefs behind it. The book will also give you an idea of whether this approach is something that opens your heart and mind to a world of possibilities or whether it's not necessarily for you! Of course, you can always schedule an appointment with me and I am happy to talk you through it personally, let you try it out, and see how it makes you feel. I have found it to be heart warming and transformative. One of the things I really appreciate about IFS is that it can help people develop a practice of healing themselves from traumatic events and negative childhood family experiences. It is important to undergo IFS with a trained therapist, but eventually it can become a self-acceptance and self-led healing practice. As is often said in IFS: "it is never too late to come home to yourself"

Integrative

I've been working in the mental health field for 25 years. I spent many of those years directing mental health programs that serve the most vulnerable folks in our community; people who are coping with severe mental health challenges, poverty, and systemic marginalization. I spent my career and my personal life as a member of the queer community and as an ally to the BIPOC individuals I know and serve. I've provided clinical supervision for dozens of therapists working towards licensure. One thing that stands true through all of this is that being humble, self-aware, and doing the work myself allows me to truly be present and authentic with those I serve. I bring my broad life experience, as a clinician, as a parent, as a community member, as a spiritual seeker to my work with you. I can't imagine feeling more honored and privileged than I do in this work. I encourage you to reach out and take a step towards caring for yourself and I thank you for another opportunity to witness the strength that is in absolutely all of us.
