Welcome to GrowTherapy I'm John Warner and I'm looking forward to working with you. I'd like you to acknowledge this step that you have taken to reach out. It takes motivation, insight, and courage to seek changes in your life. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker based in Louisville, Kentucky and I specialize in working with people who are either struggling with Substance Abuse or Mental Health issues, or who are trying to support a Loved One who is struggling with these issues, and feels overwhelmed by the circumstances. I provide a safe and supportive environment for you to explore the issues that are concerning you now. I believe that you are the expert on the things that do and don't work in your life but when life becomes overwhelming, we can sometimes lose sight of these skills and knowledge. I have found that many people often underestimate how much they know about themselves and others, and underestimate the strength that they posess to cope with and overcome the struggles that they experience. much more about themselves than they give themselves credit for, and I see part of my role as helping you unlock this knowledge and apply it in your life in ways that work best for you. While there may be times that you feel like you are not making progress, you will find that you are making more progress than you realize. We sometimes have more difficulty seeing the progress and positive qualities than we do in others. I will help guide you to see the strength and goodness that you possess and help you to see that the overall arc of our lives bends towards improvement
During our first session, we'll review the assessments that you filled out and begin the process of forming the goals that are important to you. I may have questions that will help me to understand your goals more completely. My questions are always intended to help me understand what is important to you. If you don't feel comfortable answering a question, then simply let me know that you don't want to answer the question. I see you as the navigator of each session and since goals evolve as you gain insight into what will work in your life, always feel free to let me know if you would like to modify a goal at any timer. We will also discuss what time frames work for you, and how frequently you would like to have sessions. I am very flexible in regards to how often we meet and am always open to changing appointment times and frequency when you would like to do so.
I sometimes have a difficult time pinpointing what my strengths are but throughout my career, clients and colleagues have told me how patient and supportive I am, especially with adolescents and teens. They have also let me know how composed and focused that I stay during a crisis, and how I never give up on my clients, and (most important to me) how I always accept clients where they are at a particular point in time, how I treat clients in a non-judgmental way, and how well I help people to bring out the best qualities in their lives and give them hope for the future
I enjoy working with people who are striving to understand how their personal struggles are affecting their lives. I don't believe that there is a single "right way" or "wrong way" to successfully deal with these issues. I strive to help you understand how these issues are impacting your life, and help guide you to find solutions that work best for you. I also understand that substance abuse and mental health are not always separate conditions that don't affect each other. When both are present they are usually interacting with each other and rather than requiring separate treatment, they must both be treated at the same time. I have over 25 years experience working with cooccurring substance abuse and mental health conditions, and understand how they interact with each other, and the unique challenges that they present. During the time that clients are working through these issues, there are times when specific issues or circumstances may trigger thoughts of self-harm. I take these thoughts very seriously, and never blame the client for the presence of these thoughts. A major part of my career has been spent in Crisis Intervention, and I've been very successful helping people in crisis deescalate from these states; using a supportive and compassionate approach to help redirect the focus towards strengths and success. to show the value and worth that you bring to the world.
I have used CBT for over 20 years and have found it to be effective in a wide variety of treatment settings . CBT helps us to reexamine how we perceive ourselves, others, and our environments, and helps us to understand how these perceptions affect our lives. I help clients to identify the perceptions and behaviors that are working in their lives, and which ones do not work in your life. I believe that you are the expert in deciding what behaviors work and which ones do not work in your life, but that life circumstances can sometimes impede your ability to process what you already know. It is often the case that many of us seriously underestimate what we know about ourselves and others. I see my role as helping you to identify the thoughts and behaviors in your life that are keeping you from realizing the greatness inside of you. I believe that by understanding these processes, you can have a greater understanding of yourself and others, and the dynamics that affect how you perceive your world.
