New to Grow
Hello, my name is Ruth McKowen, I am an Licenced Independent Social Worker and I am happy and honored to do the important work of helping people navigate the challenges and difficulties of life. I have been in the mental health field for ten years; five of those years I worked in crisis intervention, where I had the privilege and opportunity to meet people who were at a very dark point in their lives and to help provide stabilization and hope. My approach is centered on empowering clients to recognize their unique identity, skills, talents, and gifts, while providing the support and guidance they need.
In our first session together, here's what you can expect
I approach each client with empathy and understanding of the human condition—whether dealing with life's struggles, relationship challenges, stress, or emotional pain. I practice a person-centered therapy approach that is compassionate, non-judgmental, and at times gently challenging, with the goal of helping my clients find healing, clarity, and purpose.
The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions
I believe every person has a deep need to be heard, and it takes great courage to reach out for help. As a clinician, I am deeply invested in understanding my clients' stories, as I believe that our narratives hold the key to healing and growth. It is an honor to walk alongside my clients in their journey, helping them process the past, live in the present, and work toward emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual well-being.
The clients I'm best positioned to serve
My ideal client is someone who is ready to talk! I believe it really can be as simple as that, although it does take courage to face challenges and pain and the difficulties life brings. I believe that much can be accomplished by taking small steps combined with willingness to grow.
Christian Counseling
If the client agrees, I love using Scripture to provide support, encouragement, guidance, and more!
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
CBT is highly effective and evidence based and can help identify and replace distorted or irrational thoughts and replace these thoughts with realistic and positive thoughts.
Eclectic
There are so many helpful therapeutic approaches, I love being able to pull from a variety of techniques.
Motivational Interviewing
I value starting with where the client is in their journey and exploring what may be holding them back from moving forward.
Person-centered (Rogerian)
This approach creates a non-judgmental space for the client to explore emotions and feel free to grow in areas including increased self-esteem and self-acceptance.
