LP, 20 years of experience
I am a bicultural and bilingual (fluent in Vietnamese) licensed clinical psychologist. I am second generation Vietnamese American (I was born in the US and my parents immigrated here during the Vietnam War). I have a Ph.D. and MA in clinical psychology and have been practicing since 2005. I have worked in such settings as university counseling centers, community mental health clinics, a rape crisis center, and most recently, Kaiser Permanente. As your psychologist, my role is to validate and support you, help you learn healthy coping strategies, and guide you towards your own discoveries and insights. This will allow you to connect your awareness to healthy and helpful action.
I try to create a genuine, caring, and comfortable environment for my clients to be completely themselves, allowing a space to share quite vulnerable information. I welcome open conversations, even difficult ones!
My style of therapy has been described (by previous clients) as warm, caring, validating, and supportive; while also pointing out maladaptive communication and relational patterns. I can bring in my own background and experiences to normalize the challenges that you may be facing. Finally, I often check-in to make sure that I am meeting your therapy needs and that we are moving towards your goals.
I love to work with minority clients that appreciate a direct but gentle and caring approach. I accept most insurances, including NorCal Kaiser. However, I accept NorCal Kaiser only for individual therapy and not for couples therapy.
I use many modalities in treatment, making sure that each modality is appropriate and a good fit for my client. I often use CBT to address any maladaptive thoughts and beliefs as well as interpersonal therapy to address any relational, family, or work conflicts. Finally, I use the above methods through a multicultural lens, where I take into account my client's ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, religion, and any other identities that are significant to them.
