Hello, my name is Katie Knackmuhs owner of BGK Counseling & Consulting. I am an LPCC and LMHC. I have been in practice since 2013. I have Mind Body Skills Practitioner Certificate from The Center for Mind Body Medicine. I have worked in a variety of settings such as Community Mental Health, Hospice, University Counseling, Private Practice, and Corporate Education and Training.
What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?
The first session is focused on collecting your history, identifying purpose and goals for therapy and then learning about each other. I understand how vulnerable beginning therapy can be so I strive to go at the client's speed not wanting to push too soon.
Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.
I pride myself on being as human as the person in front of me. Often clients tell me they are relieved to learn I too am human. Despite 11 years of experience, I still feel humbled to be allowed to accompany people on their journeys toward healing and growth. If I won the lottery, I'd still choose to be a therapist. I love being a therapist and this love motivates me to keep learning about new ideas, frameworks, and ways to help people to keep my skills up to date to meet the needs of my clients.

Acceptance and commitment (ACT)
I've been utilizing ACT for 12 years. ACT focuses less on symptom reduction and more on learning to add value and meaning to our lives despite our experiences and history.
Cognitive Processing (CPT)
CPT is a therapy designed to treat PTSD. Deriving from Cognitive Behavior Therapy, CPT examines thoughts, feelings, and behaviors challenging in which ways we become stuck then learning skills and techniques to overcome these barriers. Having worked the majority of my career with young adults who are weary of delving into details of trauma, CPT can be successful without sharing about the actual trauma.
Racial trauma treatment
I grew up aware of the unique challenges underrepresented populations experience, different from my own. Confused as to why and knowing my traditional education lacked answers and explanations, I obtained a degree in African American and African Diaspora Studies. In my years as a therapist working with many underrepresented populations, I witnessed repeatedly despite traditional interventions underrepresented populations experiences with discrimination, microagressions, racism, heterosexism, etc. impact their life even if they no longer meet criteria for a mental disorder. To help better cater to these clients I have completed two training programs on Healing Racial Trauma and Stress.
Mind-body approach
I am a Certified as a Mind Body Practitioner through the Center for Mind Body Medicine. In group and individual settings I've taught people through holistic expressive, mindfulness, and movement exercises how to manage their stress and identify deeper level of needs.
Gender-affirming therapy
I haven been providing gender affirming care for 8 years serving those who identify under the trans-expansive realm. Additionally, I have trained over 400 people on how to be more LGBTQ+ inclusive in multiple settings.
