Hello! I'm Courtney, a licensed marriage and family therapist and certified sex therapist. I've been practicing post grad for 18 years and 20 years including internship training. I've been providing sex therapy for the majority of this time as well as train and supervise other sex therapists in training. My approach is direct and I don't often sugar coat things. If I see or hear something of importance or relevance, I am going to mention it to see if this something we need further explore together. I'm trained as a systems therapist and often describe myself as "an engineer for humans and relationships." I'm trained to identify and observe patterns in clients and their relationships and help them create change by changing the patterns and then experience a paradigm or mindset shift. As systems therapist, I am not often gathering a bunch of historical information at the start of our work. At times, this information is not always needed, and when it is, we can discuss it down the road. Even with my trauma modalities, I don't often have clients retell all of their traumas; instead, we focus on what is not working for them and address the traumas that are unprocessed or unresolved.

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

Our first session with often review what brings you into therapy and your goals. We will develop a treatment plan, begin to look at tools that you can implement to manage stress or conflict, and often discuss how the nervous system plays a role in our stress and how to begin to regulate the nervous system. Most clients leave with at least one of two skills to begin implementing and working on at home.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

Despite my years of training and continued education in my areas of specialty, clients who have a successful time in treatment with me report it's my direct and "to the point" stance while also providing them support to explore and grow. Some clients have described it like having floaters in the shallow end of the pool until they begin to explore the deeper end as we remove the floaters. Many clients also like that I get straight to the point of the present day concern vs focusing on family of origin from the start.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

My ideal client is someone is realizes there is a problem in their life and they are ready to explore and challenge themselves to find and create change. My clients don't have to know what the problem is but they must be open to hearing another perspective and engage in collaborative discussion to find the best solution for them. I often work with clients experiencing high conflict in their relationship, sexual dysfunction or concerns, and trauma. Many of these areas require outside referrals to rule out other medical causes or creating a tool box of coping skills and resources to assist in the work we are doing. Often times the work we are doing is not easy and can bring up a lot of emotions; I expect my clients to use the skills and tools we've created to help manage these emotions outside of session and come back to tell me how they managed it so we can continue the path to healing and growth.

My treatment methods

Attachment-based

I often use attachment theory to help clients understand how they attach to others in their life including romantic partners, family, friends, and the general public. We then work on creating secure attachments where insecure attachments exist in order to improve relationship satisfaction and quality of life experience.

Couples Counseling

I am a trained marriage and family therapist and work with all relationship dynamics. I see relationships from a systemic perspective and help clients recognize helpful and unhelpful patterns in their interactions or relationships in order to create change to develop more helpful patterns to improve relationship satisfaction. I also work with higher conflict couples where therapy has not resolved their current concerns and/or divorce is currently on the table. I also work with couples where infidelity has occurred whether the couple is still determining if they want to work through affair recovery or dissolve the relationship. I also work with ethical non-monogamous relationships including helping clients begin to open their relationship or work through discord in the current open relationship.

EMDR

EMDR is often used to help clients reprocess unresolved or unprocessed memories or experiences that are creating present day trouble in day to day life experience or relationships. EMDR is an evidence based modality used to treat a variety of concerns. I use EMDR for sex therapy in addition to other traumatic or stressful experiences.

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

IFS is a more modern modality often used with DID or other trauma or relationship distress. I incorporate IFS into other therapies such as attachment based and EMDR. We use IFS to help the client operate from a center and grounded perspective while taking into account our different "parts" that come up and create dissatisfaction in our relationships. These parts are often trying to feel heard or protect the client and we work to ensure all parts needs are met and working together.

Sex Therapy

I am an AASECT certified sex therapist and often work with clients experiencing pelvic floor dysfunction, painful sex, erectile dysfunction and differences in sexual desire or needs. I also work with kinky clients including clients exploring their various kinks or helping clients add kink into their relationship dynamic. I am familiar with D/s dynamics and the power exchange with these dynamics.
