About me

My name is Steven Merino, and I am a dedicated and compassionate Mental Health Counselor with over 10 years of experience in counseling and social work. I hold a Master’s degree in Forensic Mental Health Counseling from John Jay College of Criminal Justice and am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in the state of New York. Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working with individuals from diverse backgrounds, supporting clients who face challenges such as anxiety, depression, mood and personality disorders, trauma, and relationship issues. My approach is rooted in empathy, collaboration, and evidence-based practices designed to empower individuals to achieve personal growth, healing, and emotional well-being. I am passionate about creating a safe and supportive environment where clients can explore their experiences, develop insight, and build the tools necessary to navigate life’s challenges with confidence and resilience.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

The first session is an important opportunity for us to get to know each other and begin building a foundation of trust and understanding. My goal is to create a warm, supportive, and nonjudgmental space where you feel safe to share what brings you to therapy. During our initial meeting, we’ll start by discussing what led you to seek counseling at this time and what you hope to gain from the process. I’ll ask questions about your background, current challenges, and any previous therapy experiences you may have had. This helps me better understand your story and tailor our sessions to your unique needs and goals. We’ll also review important details such as confidentiality, session structure, and what you can expect from me as your therapist. Together, we’ll begin identifying the areas you’d like to focus on and start setting meaningful, realistic goals for our work together. The first session isn’t about solving everything right away—it’s about starting a collaborative process where you can feel heard, supported, and empowered to take the next steps toward healing and growth.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

One of my greatest strengths as a therapist is my ability to create a safe, empathetic, and nonjudgmental environment where clients feel truly seen and heard. I approach each person with genuine compassion and respect, recognizing that every individual’s experiences and challenges are unique. I am also skilled at building strong therapeutic relationships—a foundation that allows clients to feel comfortable exploring difficult emotions and life experiences. My calm, grounded presence helps clients feel supported, even when working through complex issues such as trauma, anxiety, depression, or relationship challenges. Another strength lies in my integrative and flexible approach to therapy. Drawing from various evidence-based modalities, I tailor my methods to meet each client’s specific needs, empowering them to develop insight, build resilience, and make lasting changes. Finally, my background in forensic mental health counseling gives me a unique perspective on understanding human behavior, systems, and the impact of life circumstances. This allows me to bring both compassion and clinical precision to my work—helping clients move forward with clarity, confidence, and self-awareness.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

My ideal client is someone who is ready to explore their inner world and take meaningful steps toward personal growth and emotional wellness. They may be struggling with anxiety, depression, mood or personality disorders, trauma, or relationship challenges, and are seeking a safe, supportive space to better understand themselves and develop healthier coping strategies. This person may feel stuck in patterns of thinking or behavior that no longer serve them and is motivated—whether through curiosity, necessity, or hope—to make positive changes in their life. They value authenticity, openness, and are willing to engage honestly in the therapeutic process, even when it feels uncomfortable. Whether they are navigating major life transitions, healing from past experiences, or striving to improve their relationships, my ideal client is someone who believes that growth is possible and is ready to invest in their own well-being with guidance, compassion, and collaboration.
