New to Grow
Hello, I'm Shelletta Doctor, a Licensed Professional Counselor and former U.S. Army Officer. I specialize in helping adults navigate life transitions, manage stress, and overcome challenges related to anxiety, depression, trauma, and adjustment. My approach is collaborative and goal-oriented, combining Cognitive Behavioral therapy, Mindfulness, Motivational Interviewing, and Solution Focused strategies to promote lasting growth and resilience. I'm committed to creating a supportive, nonjudgemental space where you can feel understood, empowered, and confident in your path forward.
Your first session with me is a comfortable, collaborative conversation focused on understanding your unique experiences, goals, and needs. My goal is to create a safe, respectful and judgement-free space where you can share openly at your own pace. During this session, we'll begin by discussing what brought you to counseling and what you hope to accomplish. I'll ask questions to learn more about your background, current challenges, and any coping strategies or supports you already have in place. Together, we'll begin identifying your goals for therapy and outline a plan that feels both manageable and meaningful to you.
I integrate several evidence-based approaches, including Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness-Based Therapy (MBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). These methods help you identify and change unhelpful thought patterns, build emotional regulation skills, and focus on strengths and solutions that move you forward. What makes my approach unique is the blend of clinical expertise, real-world perspective, and military experience I bring to every interaction. Clients often tell me that my style stands out because it's both structured and compassionate, rooted in evidence-based techniques, yet flexible enough to meet you where you are. You can expect honesty, collaboration, and a focus on empowering you to regain control of your thoughts, emotions, and direction in life. By the end of first session, you'll have a clear understanding of our next steps and a roadmap towards your goals.
With eight years of experience providing evidence-based mental health services, I am deeply committed to supporting the psychological wellness and functional recovery of adult clients. Drawing on my military background, I understand the unique stressors, values, and transitions associated with military service. My unique clinical expertise allows me to establish trust, rapport, and cultural alignment with both Veteran and non-Veteran clients alike, fostering a therapeutic environment that emphasizes respect, empowerment, and collaboration.
CBT serves as the foundation of my clinical approach, helping clients identify and modify maladaptive thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors contributing to emotional distress. I assist clients in developing more adaptive coping skills and achieving measurable treatment goals.
I integrate mindfulness-based strategies to help clients cultivate present-moment awareness, emotional regulation, and acceptance of internal experiences. Mindfulness techniques are incorporated into individual sessions and often combined with CBT principles to support self-regulation and resilience.
MI is used consistently to enhance motivation and readiness for change, especially when working with clients ambivalent about engaging in treatment or modifying health behaviors. Using a collaborative, nonjudgemental approach, I employ MI techniques to strengthen clients' intrinsic motivation.
I utilize SFBT to identify clients' existing strengths and resources to promote rapid problem-solving and goal attainment. This approach helps shift focus from problems to solutions, empowering clients to build on what is already working.
