Hello! My name is Dr. Krysten Blackshear, and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) based in Texas. I received my Doctorate of Social Work from Capella University, and have been practicing for 8+ years. I assist adolescents, adults, and the elderly populations through the various transitions of life. I specialize in the areas of anxiety, depression, PTSD, and geriatric therapy by partnering with clients on their journey to mental wellness.
Within the first session, clients can expect an 'open floor' and a listening ear. In order to create a plan of care that will yield results, I must first gain an understanding of where you've been and where it is you're trying to go. You will be able to share as much, or as little as you are willing. You will also be able to ask questions to make sure that I am the right therapist for you.
One of the greatest strengths that I lean into as a mental health provider, is my ability to really connect with each my clients. Therapy is ineffective unless you are able to trust the one providing guidance. It is never my desire for clients to feel alone in anything that they have gone through, or are going through. Rather, it is my hope that they will draw strength from knowing that they have true support while trying to reach their wellness goals.
Life happens to everyone, and I want you to understand that therapists are not exempt. I, too, have had to work my way through challenges; and quite honestly, I still have to make a conscious effort to not allow life to get the best of me. My ideal client is the one that is aware of all that they've gone through, but has committed themselves to refusing to give up. Though they may not know the first step to take, they are willing to learn and explore new strategies, ways of coping, and have a strong desire to heal beyond what has hurt them.
Trauma has been scientifically proven to have long-lasting on the lives of individuals, and revisiting the events can trigger or even re-traumatize clients. Therefore, it is my practice to provide a safe environment where clients can rest assured that they are always met with compassion. From the beginning, I work with clients to build relationship, establish trust and respect. Once clients are comfortable within sessions; I rely upon my expertise and sensitivity to carefully explore their trauma(s), working together to create a treatment plan that will yield the desired results of the client. My goal as a therapist is to emphasize the client's strengths and resilience, which can then be used to further develop healthy coping skills on their journey of healing.
Faith and therapy definitely intersect, and there's no longer a need to separate the two. Faith-based therapy allows for us to integrate one's spiritual beliefs and practices into the therapeutic process to facilitate the wellness journey. Through discussion, we will examine how spirituality impacts the clients thoughts, values, and decisions which we in-turn use to create a plan of treatment. Faith, I believe, is a major component to facing adversity and healing through life's challenges. Not only do clients leave sessions feeling confident in their faith, but they also leave with the tools needed to develop and employ strategies to overcome.
Whether it is known or not, thoughts and emotions strongly influence one's behavior. This fact could be the very difference between accomplishing a goal, or feeling as though you've failed before you've had a chance to begin. Through the use of CBT, I have been able to collaborate with clients to challenge the thoughts/emotions that are hindering progress to help them realize their maximum potential. By exploring difficult experiences within a safe space, we are able to identify the root cause of the feelings that are causing delay. Clients are then challenged, through a variety of assignments, to work through the hinderances at a pace that is both comfortable and beneficial for their growth; ultimately resulting in changed mindsets and them leading more productive lives.
