(she/her)
If you are struggling, having problems in your relationships, or not feeling your best emotionally we can work through this together, to relieve some of those feelings, and find ways for you to get the most out of your life, daily. I'm an independently licensed social worker in Ohio and Michigan with a Master's Degree in Social Work as well as Board certification. My experience of 32 years has included working with people who have health problems, emotional health problems, Veterans, couples, and caregivers for others with emotional or physical health problems. Because everyone goes through tough times in life, it's important to take the time to care for your self. That can mean exploring your emotional boundaries, identifying strategies to balance your life and reduce stress, improve your sleep, or work through relationship problems. Maybe you have felt stuck in dealing with something else challenging, and that's a good time to reach out to talk. I offer CBT, Mindfulness based stress reduction, motivational interviewing, Couples Counseling, and Narrative therapy and with these tools, we can find how to help you best.
You can expect for us to get to know each other and to talk about your ideal life, to begin the process. We'll talk about your goals, as we create a roadmap to live your best life and work through the rough spots. I work to empower you to grow through change with the skills you bring, and add skills learned in therapy. I believe everyone deserves their own version of happiness, self actualization, and fulfillment in their lives. When we meet in the virtual room, you bring yourself and I meet you where you are at that moment. I welcome anyone who needs a safe and warm place to talk openly. As with all my clients in the past and present, you will be welcomed, seen, and heard. Hopefully you will be in a place that offers privacy and freedom to share openly, I will be talking to you from my home, undisturbed with the exception of dogs who are possibly sleeping at my feet or playing in the room. We can talk about where you are hurting and where you are thriving, and where things started as well as where you want to see your life's path take you in the future. We can talk about how you got to this point and what you brought in your backpack, so to speak. Or if you are feeling what you have brought isn't really serving your needs anymore we will look at ways to unpack that and leave it behind, while replacing those tools with new or modified tools that you can try. I believe everyone should have this safe and reassuring environment to talk freely and explore what feels vulnerable. I also find it helpful to talk about your current life and include your routine in that, to delve into what makes you get out of bed, and occupies your time. We might talk about your living situation, your friends, family, community, and habits; these are all unique and really open windows of understanding more to guide us. Sometimes we might start a session with a short mindful exercise to help us focus in on the present. Mindfulness being the state of paying attention, in the present moment, on purpose as said by Jon Kabat-Zinn, is a tool we might use in sessions and outside sessions, so if that's not something you find useful we can skip it. Otherwise I find it helps with gaining focus and managing stress and time differently than most of us are used to. We will also talk about you as a whole person, mind and body, just to get a basic understanding of how they might be interacting of if there are any changes happening physically that might have impacts on your mind. The same can be explored in reverse as sometimes experiencing stress affects physical conditions or can cause physical symptoms. Sleep is another area we will explore, knowing how it can really affect our lives overall. We can really talk about anything that's important to you, and sometimes I might want to know more that you feel like sharing at that time. That is totally ok and we will table it or maybe come back to it later. This isn't always easy because therapy sometimes feels like work, but it can really get into some tough feelings and experiences, and realities that you packed away to forget or get out of focus. I promise to respect your wants and needs around this, but I also want you to know that I'll be here whether you want to go down the rocky path of bad past experiences, things that you are fearful or unsure about, or even those breakthroughs you make when you come upon a realization about something you can change. I believe you can do this work and I hope to be right there for you while you do.
I'm open and honest about myself and my life experiences, good and bad. I am affirming, interested in your feelings, life experiences, and needs. I want you to get you to a place where you feel in better balance overall. I have helped many people over the years and look forward to meeting you, knowing that you will be welcomed, seen and heard with me. Skills I use to help include mindfulness, meditation, as well as more traditional therapy skills such as CBT, brief, solution focused therapy, motivational interviewing, narrative therapy. In my practice, I like to talk with you before I plan what interventions to use, because everyone is unique. We will find ways to help you gain some skills you can add to your skillset so you won't have to be meeting with me any longer than you find helpful. I like seeing people find their answers and balance, and achieving what brings them satisfaction.
I've accompanied many people on their journeys through adult life stages and have helped them find ways to cope with stressors and thrive, as well as develop healthy and fulfilling relationships. I enjoy working with adults of any age and have worked with younger adults struggling with adjustments to life seasons and relationships, through middle age while coping with the changes related to aging and through older age. My areas of focus include but are not limited to people working through relationship problems, physical and mental health problems, caregiver stress, anxiety, depression, general stress, and working with military Veterans.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
CBT can be used to reduce your anxiety, depression and other problems. I've seen this method help people feel more calm and content many times. You will learn to use the techniques on your own for future success as well.
Couples Counseling
Couples counseling can be used to improve your relationship by gaining better understanding of one another's viewpoint while building trust and respect for one another. I use this often to help people improve their communication and feel better appreciated within their relationships. Relationship satisfaction is possible and with some work, you can enjoy years of happiness together.
Mindfulness-Based Therapy
Mindfulness is a way to improve your connections to your daily life, and have better interactions with others. We can use mindfulness together to make all areas of your life feel more in line with what you want rather than feeling like you are just getting through your days. Bring peace to your days using some preventative techniques that you can practice anytime.
Motivational Interviewing
Motivational interviewing is a way to help unblock your progress towards living the life you want, by finding out where you are on the road to making changes. Motivational interviewing is useful when you are feeling stuck and can help remove what's holding you back.
Narrative
Narrative therapy helps me learn a little of your history and background so we can talk more about rewriting what's next for you. This is how you tell me your story and what you think is important in how your past might be affecting you right now, and it helps both of us know more about how you see your present self and your future self.
