A. "Pete" Peters, MS, LPC___*___Howdy!___*___ My name is "Pete" Peters.___*___ I have 35 years of experience in the field of behavioral health and have been counseling for 30 of those years. I love working with clientele who see the possibility of change and are willing to take risks to see that change manifest. If it were easy, anybody could it... I am interested in helping those who are willing to make the right sacrifices to make positive change happen.
As rapport is essential to the therapeutic relationship, during the first session, I generally attempt to introduce myself in such a way that clientele get a good idea of who I claim to be. Holding true to this claim throughout subsequent treatment helps to forge a quid pro quo, therapeutic relationship consisting of authenticity and genuineness. The first session is the commencement of learning about ourselves, together. Beyond that, clients can expect to walk away from sessions knowing more about themselves and how to best manage their circumstances to achieve their desired results. "And ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free."
As a clinician, one of my greatest God-given abilities is to objectively analyze situations and circumstances and then come up with possible alternatives that may not have previously been considered. Thinking outside of the box has come in pretty handy in my 30-year career as a clinical counselor. Nevertheless, allowing clientele to come up with these revelations on their own is where the actual "biggest strength" comes into play...
As a lot of individuals find themselves busy between the hours of 8:00am and 5:00pm, I tend to cater to individuals who require nontraditional hours for their therapy sessions. Beyond that, I have found that I am most effective with clients who have reached a point in their lives where they realize that serious change needs to take place. They know that it is possible, but they are just not quite sure how to make it happen. I present the techniques and tools, they make the changes, and life is different and more comfortable for them moving forward.
"...be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind..." Neuroplasticity, Rewiring Your Brain, however one choses to address it, the idea of getting rid of old, irrational, nonhelpful, maladaptive patterns of thinking is the premise behind the version of CBT used in my practice. Out with the old, and in with the new - new thoughts, new behaviors, new emotions. We all owe it to ourselves to at least give it a try!
Although I do not necessarily promote myself as a "Christian Counselor," I do believe The Bible, also known as "God's Word," to be just that. Increasingly, it has been validated by historical documentation, archeological discoveries, and veritable fulfilment of prophecy after prophecy. I believe it for the truth that it promotes and the truth that it continues to manifest. I believe that God has made it very clear in his Word the ways that human beings can come to know true peace... the journey is not always what one would expect. "Christian Counseling," as I practice it, integrates principles of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy from a "Christian" world view. His ways are higher than our ways. Discovering, understanding, and practicing them can and does bring great freedom and peace to many a weary soul.
"Sometimes you're the wind shield, sometimes you're the bug," but who wouldn't want to learn how to WIN in almost any situation? The "glass is half full" is a perspective that we could all learn to adopt if we would agree to undertake a radical paradigm shift. To learn, study, and practice daily our own strengths and virtues is one of the dominant keys to positive change. Transformation through a renewed mind, of course, is another. "Success" is ultimately in the eye of the beholder.
