Hello! My name is Andrea. I am a multiethnic, bilingual (Spanish), and LGBPTQQIA+ identified practitioner with a trauma-focused approach to therapy. I believe the majority of the challenges we face in daily life stem from experiences we have gone through as children, and that, only by addressing and processing these experiences in a more adaptive way, can we achieve true healing. Although I utilize elements from a number of different modalities in my treatment plans- according to the needs of each individual- I prioritize the use of EMDR in order to address the root of our struggles and symptoms.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

During our first session, I primarily want to get to know you. I will ask you a lot of questions about what brings you to therapy, what you hope to get out of it, and a bit about your psychosocial history. I take a more conversational approach than other therapists- questionnaire-style interviews are not comfortable or enjoyable for me, and I have found that most clients feels the same. I will also give you some information about my therapeutic approach and details about what to expect from EMDR or whichever modality fits your situation best. Finally, time-permitting, I will do my best to integrate some intervention or behavioral experiment for you to utilize until the next session.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I believe my greatest strength as a provider is my warm presence and non-judgmental approach. I have often been told by clients that they are surprised by how much and how easily they share, even in the first meeting, and that they can say anything without overwhelming me (I have seen and heard a lot!). I am also collaborative and flexible, willing to alter my approach if it does not work for a particular client. I respect that you are the expert in your own life, and I am only here to get you back in touch with yourself, your values, and your healthy inner self. All these aspects set the basis for an open and trusting therapeutic relationship, which is one of the primary requirements for successful treatment.

My treatment methods

EMDR

I have completed an intensive training protocol in EMDR, and have been putting it into practice for nearly 1 year. I continue to receive monthly consultation in my efforts toward full certification. I utilized both the complete therapy approach, as well as EMDR interventions, in an effort to address and heal the primary sources of trauma, which underlie most challenges that present themselves in our daily lives.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I have been using CBT for most of my career to assist clients in becoming more aware of their unhelpful thinking patterns and resultant unhealthy behaviors; to work toward reshaping these cognitions and beliefs about themselves, others, and the world; and to better manage their symptoms of depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other related conditions.

Grief Therapy

I believe grief is interwoven throughout our lives, as loss is not exclusive to physical death. I have extensive experience in supporting individuals through the various types of grief, including anticipatory and complicated grief, and serve as a container for the deep and complicated emotions that manifest as you move through this experience.
