I am Kyra Alston, a LMHC who has been working in the mental health field for over 10 years. I have worked in both residential and outpatient clinic settings, as well as a small private practice. In that time, the most rewarding aspect of my career has been helping my get to a point where they don't need me anymore. This includes goals such as enjoying their life more overall, changing patterns of interpersonal relationships, and feeling less weighed down by depression and anxiety.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

First sessions typically focus on getting to know each other. My assessment style is conversational and relaxed, which means I tend to ask less questions and instead focus on where our conversation takes us, to identify what current challenges are. Some things I will ask about are preferences, as far as, communication, scheduling and homework assignments.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

My greatest strengths are empathy and understanding, I am highly attuned to others and am good at providing context to concern areas. My passion for mental health, and the enjoyment of life is also a main strength. I strongly believe that life is meant to be enjoyed, not just monotonously going about from day to day on autopilot. In addition, I can challenge thinking in a way that still feels supported. Some of my clients have called me a "therapy villain," where I'm able to have the tough conversation while still making them laugh and want to come back the next session. I'm a firm believer that just because its not something you want to hear, doesn't mean you didn't need to hear it. With balance, of course.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

My ideal clients are teens and adults who are struggling to achieve goals they have set for themselves. One who has experienced trauma in the past and isn't sure how to move forward. One who has excessively negative thoughts about themselves or the world, and wants to improve how they see life. A client who has felt like they are drowning in life, in sadness, in anxiety, in fear, and wants to identify strategies to come back afloat. New clients should know that, at my core, I am human; I do not believe therapy has to be robotic. I don’t conduct assessments in a rigid, overly structured way; I am much more conversational. I find that helping people feel connected and in control is a great way to drive treatment. I am very holistic, and you will hear me talk at length about balance in all things. In general, I am solution-focused and empathetic, and I use approaches that focus on cognitions and emotions. I love to see my clients come to realizations on how to improve their lives, relocate the joy in life, build relationships, and more. And most importantly, I believe that each person's treatment should be directly correlated to their current circumstances and needs.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

CBT and TF-CBT are heavily used to help clients develop insight into how their thoughts and emotions effect behaviors, and how to undo harmful, unproductive and negative thinking patterns. This include thoughts perpetuated by generational trauma and traumatic experiences throughout ones life.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT)

DBT techniques are used to help improve self soothing and coping behaviors, improving overall stress management and replacing maladaptive coping behaviors.

Solution Focused Brief Treatment

SFBT is used to help identify specific life goals and action steps that can help attain those goals.
