About me

Hello there! I'm Patrick Powell. I think of myself as a practitioner, counselor educator, and researcher. I work with children, adults, couples, and families. I think of counseling as a process where you and I build a relationship and work together to address whatever issues are impacting you. I'm a holistic counselor, meaning that I will explore multiple aspects of your life, including how you engage socially, how you think about situations, how you manage or express your emotions, your behaviors and skills, the quality of your interactions with family and friends, and several other areas of funcitoning. I'm also a strength-based counselor. I believe that we all have untapped resources, both internal and external, that we can use to make our lives better. I have worked in non-profit and two private practice environments. In terms of my credentials, I received a Master of Arts degree in Community Counseling and a Doctorate in Counselor Education and Supervision. Along with clinical practice, I have served as a faculty member in clinical mental health counseling programs since 2011. I train future generations of counselors to work with people. I hold several licenses and certifications. I am a Nationally Certified Counselor as well as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Florida and a Licensed Professional Counselor in Tennessee. I am also a Qualified Supervisor in Florida. I have published several manuscripts, a book on the assessment and treatment of trauma and I have current works in press. I also often deliver presentations on process addictions and other topics at the SACES and ACA conventions.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

In our first session, I hope we have a chance to get to know one another in a meaningful way. I hope you walk away from that session feeling heard, and feeling comfortable talking with me. Additionally, I hope you experience some level of encouragement being able to get a few things off your chest, and I hope we are able to set some goals for our time together.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

Some of my strengths include my broad knowledge base in terms of counseling theories and techniques, my optimism and energy regarding our ability to change our lives, and my years of experience working with clients. I've worked with clients in different milieus; outpatient, inpatient in-home services, et cetera, since 2006. I've worked with people to help them address the majority of issues that fall under mental health issues, challenges that occur with life changes, relationship issues with couples, and family functioning issues.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

My dream client is someone that has a reasonable level of insight and is ready to do the work to make their lives better. That being said, it's very common for me to meet people who are just upset, and don't quite have that direction yet. It's also common for me to meet people who struggle with some of the decisions they feel they need to make. Regardless of whether you are ideal or not, I hope you'll take the opportunity to touch base with me.

My treatment methods

Acceptance and commitment (ACT)

ACT is a more recent therapy with a focus on acceptance of what is, using mindfulness to increase your awareness of your values and goals, and living a life that is aligned with your central being. For many clients, this results in fewer symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

As humans, we are prone to cognitive distortions, or "thinking crookedly." Unfortunately, thinking about ourselves or events from a distorted perspective leads us to be unhappy or anxious. CBT is used to help us think more flexibly, often resulting in less negative thoughts and feelings.

Cognitive Processing (CPT)

CPT is a structured model for helping people manage traumatic reactions like PTSD. The model occurs in phases, first focusing on increasing a sense of safety, and later, tolerating distress and anxiety

Solution Focused Brief Treatment

This model is used to help people who need to think less about the problem and more about finding a solution. This is a brief model that can help some people in very few sessions.

Couples Counseling

I use a variety of models of help couples make decisions about their relationship and move forward. I use different models, depending on the couple's challenges and needs. Emotion focused therapy is a model that I use quite often. The focus is how we relate to each other based upon our early attachment styles and needs.

We just had our first session and it was incredibly helpful. Patrick created a comfortable space where my partner and I could really work through some conversations we’ve been struggling with. We already feel more understood and supported moving forward.

I really appreciated how well Patrick listened and responded to the issues I had. He asked me about things I have tried and would be willing to try that were very eye opening. I left the session with things to work on and a clear path to trying to improve myself.

I believe he is very knowledgeable and helped us as couple a lot. We are going to talk and see if we will go with him or something more faith based.
