Hello and welcome! I look forward to working with you soon. Let me tell you about the type of counselor I am... You can expect a personable and professional experience with me. My approach is nonjudgmental, compassionate, and goal‑oriented, and I work to create a space where you feel heard and understood. I will listen closely, validate your experiences, and offer thoughtful feedback that supports your growth. Together, we will identify a treatment plan and goals that align with what you want for your life. My role is to walk alongside you with respect, clarity, and collaboration. I am originally from Michigan but currently reside in Arizona. I have been married for 35 years and have 6 mostly adult kids. I love water sports, biking, crocheting and camping.
I utilize cognitive/behavioral, psychodynamic, trauma approaches, DBT and mindfulness approaches and interventions. I consider my approach to therapy integrative and grounded in the philosophical roots of client-centered therapy. You can also expect me to emphasize insight, skill-building, and interpersonal processes in our therapy sessions. If you believe I might be a good match for you, I encourage you to reach out so we can decide how to move forward. I have completed my coursework for my PhD and hold a Master of Art (M.A.) degree in counseling (1996) and a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Psychology (1994)
Interpersonally, I bring a warm, relaxed, and personalized approach that’s tailored to your needs. I enjoy an interactive style, building on your strengths while using a mix of evidence-based methods. My focus is on education, equipping you with the tools and skills to support yourself. Our conversations and treatment plan will be customized to your unique situation, and I’m committed to addressing your concerns with dignity, respect, empathy, and without judgment. As my client, you’ll feel supported and encouraged to gain insight and self-awareness about your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Therapy isn’t just about conversation—it’s also about learning practical strategies to cope, work through life’s challenges, and build resilience. Choosing the right counselor is an important decision, so take your time and make sure you feel comfortable with the person you choose. Reaching out for help takes a lot of courage. You have taken an important first step by signing up here with Grow Therapy. I look forward to working with you to achieve your goals. Congratulations!!! Regarding professionalism, it is my goal to contact you within 12-24 hours of receiving a message from you. Rest assured; I will always get back to you. In the meantime, I would like you to familiarize yourself with my current availability on my calendar where you can schedule an initial session. If there is a day/time that is not available, please let me know. I will see if I can accommodate your specific request. Keep in mind that this forum does not provide emergency services. Therefore, if you/they require urgent assistance and are in crisis (i.e., suicidal/homicidal thoughts/attempts) please call 1-800-273-TALK (24 hour/day), dial 911, or visit a Mind 24/7 near you. I look forward to hearing from you!
My ideal client is... 1. Motivated for change — They’re not just curious about growth; they’re actively seeking it. They show up ready to engage, experiment, and follow through. 2. Insight‑seeking — They want to understand why they think, feel, and behave the way they do. They’re willing to explore underlying beliefs, emotional patterns, and past experiences. 3. Tired of ineffective cycles — They recognize that certain thoughts or behaviors aren’t serving them anymore. They’re ready to interrupt old habits and replace them with healthier, more intentional ones. 4. Open to feedback and new strategies — They’re receptive to guidance, willing to try new tools, and able to tolerate the discomfort that comes with growth. 5. Committed to personal responsibility — They understand that while support is essential, change ultimately comes from within.

Acceptance and commitment (ACT)
My experiences with this treatment method has been successful, especially with clients who are ready for a positive change in their lives. This is a proactive modality and can ensure new opportunities for change.
Attachment-based
Attachment based therapy looks at dysfunctional attachment styles and how to improve issues of abandonment, codependency and RAD. Clients will learn about trust and issues related to their self esteem/self-worth
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I have been using CBT therapy for over 20 years. CBT analyzes your thoughts to see if they are “working for you.” Also, if you are ready for change, we will work together to change behaviors. I use CBT with clients affected by addictions, parenting and relationship issues and depression/anxiety
Psychodynamic
The Psychodynamic approach focuses on how unconscious thoughts, early relationships, and recurring emotional patterns shape present-day behavior and mental health. The approach is to explore patterns in behaviors/thoughts and identify unresolved childhood wounds. The primary goals of psychodynamic therapy include: Increasing self-awareness and understanding of unconscious motivations Resolving internal conflicts and recurring relational patterns Improving emotional regulation and interpersonal relationships Supporting long-term mental health improvements, particularly for depression, personality disorders, and relationship difficulties
Dialectical Behavior (DBT)
DBT is a tool that offers specific opportunities for cognitive growth and development. DBT looks at thoughts as rational vs. irrational, while incorporating your wise mind. Hands on tools will be given to you to use for anxiety and a host of other issues/symptoms.

Heather has been so good as our couples therapist! She is very good at recognizing overarching issues and direct but patient in bringing them up and helping us find solutions that work for us. Excellent listener and I’m so happy we found her after trying a bunch of therapists! She is also super flexible with our schedules and willing to work around two busy schedules.

Heather was hands down one of the best therapists I have ever had. She will work with you and understand you. She will meet you in the middle and help you feel comfortable and accepted.
