LPC, 13 years of experience
Hi! My name is Daryll, and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). I strive to create a therapeutic space in which every client can feel truly, deeply seen and feel completely understood without fear of judgment. Empathy and acceptance are of utmost importance to me. As Carl Rogers said, “The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.” In a world where relationships are becoming more and more difficult, it is my mission to create an absolutely safe space for clients to be completely honest with themselves so that they can develop a deep level of self-acceptance and self-respect. When you feel totally accepted and valued exactly as you are, you can finally start to move towards living your life as your best self. Together, we can deconstruct whatever is holding you back. I am honored to sit with you in whatever darkness you are experiencing, and to hold space with you and hold hope for you, while we work together towards the life of peace and balance that is waiting for you. We are all meant to live a life of joy and integration, and that is absolutely possible if we are willing to put in the work to get there.
The first session, I will ask a lot of questions to start to gain an understanding of what your life has looked like to this point, what has brought you in, what you hope to gain from therapy, and what our work together may look like to best meet your needs. I want to try to understand what exactly is currently going on in your life that led you to reach out, how your past may have contributed to your present, what supports you have or you need, and what your goals are for yourself. It's also a time for both of us to assess whether we are a good "fit" for one another. Finding the right therapist is essential, and someone who worked well for one may not work well for another. I want you to feel free to ask me whatever questions you may have, to see whether I am a good fit for you. I would be happy to meet for a free, 15 minute call, prior to an intake session, to see whether we are a good fit. Feel free to reach out via Grow messenger or via email at darylldouglas @ hushmail.com to set that up.
I am innately a nurturer, and am deeply empathic, so being in the role of support person comes naturally to me. I believe that we should always help where we can, and it is in my nature to see the best in everyone. I naturally seek to understand who people are at their core and why they develop into the people they become, but I simultaneously strive towards growth and self-actualization. I believe this life is a precious gift, and we all deserve to have our time here be fulfilling and meaningful. I am grateful and honored to be part of a profession where I can dedicate my life to helping others become the best version of themselves. The growth and change I have been privileged to witness in my clients over the past 15 years has been a profound honor. I see therapy as "soul work," and have found that it generally requires us to deconstruct our past experiences, deeply held belief systems, and examine how we think, feel, and behave. It often requires us to identify what we truly value, and how we can live in accordance with those values. Frequently, it is hard, painful, and difficult, but ALWAYS the results are worth it.
I specialize in working with the adolescent and young adult population, and I absolutely love to work with that age group. I enjoy working with young people to navigate the various challenges they face, including social issues, life transitions, and difficulty in relationships, by building resiliency, gaining empowerment, and identifying inner strengths. Transitioning between different life stages, and growing in general, can be both amazing and terrifying at the same time. I am so honored to walk that crazy path with my clients, and to work with them to identify and challenge what is holding them back, offer support and validation, and to develop coping strategies that work best for them in order to find emotional balance and maximize their potential.
My approach to therapy is integrated and holistic, and I draw from several different evidence-based modalities depending on the needs of the individual client. I am heavily person centered, and also commonly utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), existential psychology and narrative therapy, as well as psychodynamic and family as a system approach. I always work through a trauma informed lens, am experienced in EMDR, have advanced training in perinatal mental health, and am mindful of different areas of cultural sensitivity.
