I have been a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist since 2003. I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in General Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Asheville in 1997, then went on to complete my Master of Science degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Nova Southeastern University in 1999. I have spent the majority of my career working with individuals, couples and families coping with mental health issues, grief, loss and all types of trauma. I specialize in couples' work, collaborative treatment for anxiety and depression, family systems issues (change, divorce, caregiving), women's issues, and working with individuals and families who have experienced cognitive impairment, trauma, and illness/bereavement issues. I am trained in hypnotherapy, CBT, EMDR, CISM, mindfulness, and I most recently became a CIMHP (Certified Integrative Mental Health Practitioner). I am also a Certified Alzheimer’s Level I and II Trainer through the University of South Florida, providing dementia-specific training and support to family caregivers as well as healthcare professionals.
My goal for our first session is to establish trust and rapport with one another. I will begin by asking general background and history questions, and then dive into the specific challenges you are facing. This will help us to create some preliminary goals for follow-up sessions.
I currently share mutual patients with a psychiatrist in private practice, where I have many years' experience working with people with mental health issues seeking collaborative treatment. I have an extensive background in healthcare administration, aging-related disorders, terminal illness, and geriatric services. I am highly experienced working with couples and family issues, including divorce and blended family dynamics. I am a trauma-trained and trauma-focused clinician, well-versed in assessing for trauma symptoms and adverse reactions to all types of trauma, including relationship abuse recovery. I provide parent/guardian support, training and coaching in addition to working with children, as I believe work with children is not linear and often requires a family systems approach.
Adolescents 15 and older Individuals Couples of all ages (with a specialty in senior care issues, long-term planning and decision-making; and also pre and post divorce/break-up family work) Families Seniors I treat clients collaboratively while under the care of their PCP or psychiatrist, and I am very familiar with standard psychiatric treatment, anti-depressant/anxiety meds, sleep aides, mood disorder treatment, etc. Typically, my clients are referred to me for anxiety, depression, women's issues, grief and loss, trauma, and couples' therapy. A significant number of my new clients in the past year have been victims of Narcissistic Personality Disorder abuse. I am CISM/trauma-trained to provide crisis intervention to first responders, schools, and other local community organizations who have endured a sudden loss or traumatic event. I am trained in CBT, mindfulness meditation practices, EMDR, and hypnotherapy. I am highly focused currently on increasing hypnosis work in my sessions to optimize my clients' healing. I am a newly Certified Integrative Mental Health Professional (CIMHP), which aligns all of my training and experience to optimize my client's healing- both the mind and the body, with a focus on healthy recovery in all aspects of wellness.
I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with significant experience and training in couples' and IFS therapy. I enjoy working with couples in all stages of their relationship, but most often receive new clients at the most critical stage- as couples enter therapy to ultimately save their relationship and/or to keep their family together. I utilize principles from the Gottman Institute as well as explore attachment styles, using aspects of the acceptance and commitment therapy model (ACT), and elements of emotion-focused therapy (EFT). I assess for generational trauma, identify unhealed core wounds, and other negative behavior patterns contributing to unhealthy communication and relationship dynamics.
I have extensive experience in CBT work, teaching and empowering clients to consistently implement the tools they need to improve their anxiety and depression symptoms, reduce their trauma responses, and improve their reactions to triggers. CBT/DBT skills are critical not only for self-regulation, but also for goal-setting and making necessary life changes.
I use hypnotherapy to assist my clients with optimizing their goals to unlock limitless potential. This can be achieved as we bypass the critical factor of the conscious mind, and work directly with limiting beliefs and behavior patterns embedded in the subconscious. Hypnosis is highly effective for enhancing performance, treating bad habits, focusing on health and wellness, weight loss, improving sleep- any issues rooted in the subconscious - where we take the 'shortcut' to make incredible changes in just a short number of sessions. Heal your mind, heal your body! Ideal hypnotherapy clients may also include: corporate executives, high performance athletes, corporate executives, and anyone else with a specific goal or behavior they would like to address.
I assess the client's level of strength, abilities, and functioning, to determine the nature or type of intervention. I evaluate events that happen in childhood that influence our adult lives and relationships, with an emphasis on subconscious habits and behavior patterns. This method is particularly helpful in my work with women's issues, specifically as women go through life changes, divorce, career/identity/role changes, and recovering from an abusive or toxic relationship.
I use mindfulness in my work with clients who wish to become more self-aware, who have experienced trauma or other life-changing events, toxic break-ups, high conflict divorces, job changes, loss, etc., to help them recognize their triggers, and to transform their negative behavior patterns into more positive lifestyle habits. I utilize a range of relaxation, stress reduction techniques and experiential activities to help clients cope with their symptoms more effectively, and re-process traumatic events and other painful emotional situations.
