My name is Shawna and I have lived in Texas my whole life.I have been practicing as LPC since July 2020, before that I was and LPC intern for over 3 years. I am also a Licensed Social Worker in Texas, and worked in nursing homes for almost 5 years before beginning my masters program to be a counselor. I have worked in community mental health for almost 5 years, and started in special education serving students at school since November 2020. I also worked for Better Help for over a year by providing teletherapy to teens and adults. I believe that clients are their own experts, but we all knew guidance in how to overcome our challenges and we can do that with therapy.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

During the first session, I always go over the expectations of therapy, but also try to get to know you and learn more about why you are seeking out therapy. We will began to look at areas that need further exploration and possible areas to focus on in your sessions.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

My strength as a provider is my ability to listen, provide feedback and see things from your perspective. I believe in that therapeutic rapport is one the strongest ways to help clients, and that is achieved through listening and being empathetic.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I have used CBT with all ages of clients, it is versatile and can be approached and applied in different ways. I began by using it children and then adults. I received training after becoming fully licensed. I find that the principles of this training can be used with almost every mental health issue.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT)

I became knowledgeable with this modality in working with severe and persistent mental illness that were among the clients that we served in the local mental health community clinic. I have not received training specifically in this modality, but through years of practice in working with individuals that did not feel CBT worked for them, and needed a different approach.
