Hello! I'm Katherine McDonald, a licensed Mental Health Counselor with a passion for human connection. My clients describe me as warm, compassionate, real and down-to-earth. I specialize in treating anxiety, depression, trauma recovery, PTSD, and grief. With extensive experience in trauma work, I can help you heal from painful events, finding hope and renewed energy for life. In addition to working individually with teens and adults, I also practice couples therapy

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

Although it can feel otherwise, you are not your anxiety or depression. Through our sessions, you will discover a greater sense of your authentic self apart from your challenges. You will gain insight into the root cause of issues while also learning tools to manage and improve your symptoms in the present. Together we will build upon your strengths and empower you to thrive well beyond your time in therapy

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

As a trauma and grief specialist, I have gained extensive training and clinical experience with the Trauma Resolution Center in Miami, Florida by helping clients heal from traumatic experiences. All painful life events no matter their range in severity can contribute to beliefs, perceptions or behaviors that may be holding you back from connecting with your authentic self and living the life you want. I believe my strengths lie in helping clients heal from past trauma and nurture their inner child while also helping them cultivate their values and live the life they imagine in the present.

Describe the client(s) you are best positioned to serve.

As a client-centered therapist, I will strive to understand your unique story and tailor my approach to your individual needs. Together we will explore what feels meaningful and authentic to you as well as what no longer serves you, identify and heal from life events that have led to patterns that are holding you back, and develop new ways of thinking and being that will help you thrive. Together we will help you find your authentic path forward.

My treatment methods

Acceptance and commitment (ACT)

Life can be both difficult and painful AND rich and meaningful. ACT is designed to help clients manage their challenges through mindfulness based skills while actively putting their attention on creating a meaningful life based on personal values. I help clients learn to accept and create space from difficult thoughts and emotions in order to move in the direction of the life they imagine.

Trauma Informed Care

All painful life events no matter their range in severity can contribute to beliefs, perceptions or behaviors that may be holding you back from connecting with your authentic self and living the life you want. Unresolved trauma can also result in symptoms of anxiety, depression, and PTSD. I help clients process and heal from difficult life experiences and gain insight into how these events have shaped their identity. When we gain awareness of how internalizing these experiences has negatively impacted us, we can start to identify new ways of thinking and being that help us thrive.

Attachment-based

Understanding attachment styles to early caregivers often shapes how we relate to others in our adult lives. I help clients gain insight into how they relate to others as it connects to early life experiences to facilitate healing as well foster healthier, secure relationships in the present.
