Hi there, I am Joanna Have you ever gone to therapy and found it hard to open up because the sessions appear rigid and impersonal, and maybe you felt judged? In my practice is my goal to lead sessions in a non-judgmental way, with the belief that clients are the experts in their own lives. I like to describe my relationship with clients as a relationship among equals. My role in the session is to help you process some of the challenges you are experiencing and offer skills that can help create the change you want to see in your life. My theoretical orientation is dialectical behavioral therapy and I try to hold the balance between acceptance and change, this means accepting that although things might be difficult at this moment we can learn new behaviors so life can be improved. My goal is really to help clients increase their overall satisfaction in life and relationships. I am also trained in trauma work to help clients process traumatic experiences.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

My goal is that my clients will leave each session feeling validated in their personal experiences because the reality is that life can be hard. Is also my goal for my clients to leave each session feeling empowered, with the skills they need to make desired changes that will lead them to long-term satisfaction and a life they will be happier with.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

My biggest strength is my ability to make clients feel understood, help them gain acceptance of things they have no control over, be okay with setting boundaries when needed, and feel good about the changes they want to make.

My treatment methods

Dialectical Behavior (DBT)

I have used DBT approach to treat and support patients with a variety of problems for about 10 years. I love to use DBT in my sessions because it allows me to keep my sessions client centered through validation and goal setting and provides many skills and interventions to help patients produce the kind of change they want to see in their lives. DBT helps create behavioral and emotional change through skills building.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Cognitive behavioral Therapy is useful in helping us understand the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Through cognitive behavioral therapy we can learn to identify unhelpful thought patterns that may create negative emotions, and learn how to restructure these thought so they are more in sync with reality.
