About me

Hello! My name is Vanessa and I've been a therapist for five years now. My background in social work has equipped me to understand the impact our environments and upbringings can have on our mental health. I'm a lifelong learner and as such, I am completing my doctorate degree in social work at the University of Alabama, specializing in clinical social work and focusing on reproductive justice concerns.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

The first session moves at your pace- there will never be any pressure to discuss something you do not want to. My main focus is learning about what brings you to therapy and collecting background information to help me understand your current wellbeing. I may ask you about your upbringing, family, important relationships, and significant life events you've experienced. By the second session, I hope to establish goals based on what you are seeking from our sessions together. It is very important to me that we are on the same page and you have a clear understanding of what you can expect from our work together.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

Many times throughout my life, even before becoming a therapist, I've been told I have a calm and warm presence. I'm glad this is so, as I want to create a welcoming environment where you can be entirely yourself. I like to describe my approach as flexibly structured, meaning I often prioritize addressing what you feel you need most at any given session, while also offering different options to choose from if you're not entirely sure what direction to take. I enjoy interactive and visual activities, meaning I might use a whiteboard or worksheet to guide us through problem solving or exploring situations.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

Are you feeling stuck in unhelpful patterns- perhaps comparing yourself to others, lashing out at loved ones, feeling unmotivated or unfocused at work? Our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are messengers, offering us information on areas that might need addressing. Therapy is a great place to begin that process. Whether you're unsure of what is behind these patterns, or you've been struggling with anxiety, ADHD, grief, or big life changes, I offer a collaborative space where we can tackle these challenges in a way that feels authentic to you.

Acceptance and commitment (ACT)

I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all therapy or “quick fixes.” Instead, I offer a thoughtful, steady space for self-understanding, self-compassion, and sustainable change. I pull from several modalities to best suit your needs- whether that's exploring how your past is influencing you now or practicing new tools to help you navigate today's stressors.
