Hello! I am Courtney Henson, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LSCW) licensed in NJ and DC. I am so happy you are choosing therapy as a way to improve your life. I received my Masters degree from The University of Pennsylvania and have been working as an individual therapist for 10 years. I use a variety of treatment modalities and techniques including CBT and ACT. I love gardening, going to the Jersey shore, watching and rewatching The Office, cuddling my 2 cats and reading at every spare moment of my day.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

The first therapy session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other to see if there is a good therapeutic fit. In other words, you can ask any questions you have about the therapy process and what to expect. I will ask questions about your background as well as what you hope to accomplish in therapy. We will develop a guideline related to specific therapy goals.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I feel that being a therapist is a gift in that I am able to be with people during their best and worst times. I strive to help clients to gain strength and empowerment in themselves. I give clients the space to gain comfort in using therapy tools to accomplish what they want in life. Therapy is a collaborative journey, and I am honored to walk alongside my clients as they achieve greater clarity, connection and fulfillment in their lives.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I use CBT as a tool to help clients to see that it is possible to have better control over thoughts, feelings and behaviors. CBT is a useful in challenging and overcoming automatic thoughts that tend to increase anxiety and depression.

Acceptance and commitment (ACT)

I have used ACT with clients who experience anxiety, depression and low sense of self worth. This type of therapy is an extension of CBT that helps clients to decrease psychological distress by accepting thoughts and feelings without judgement. I have helped client to take action based on their values rather than on fears or anxious thoughts.

Strength-Based

I have worked with clients in a strengths-based approach I order to help them retell their personal history of traumas, stressors and pain through a lens of themselves as a survivor rather than a victim. Emphasis is on the client’s individual strengths and survival skills.
