Hey! I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor based in Massachusetts and I have been practicing in the mental health field for 13 years. Nearly all of my experience is with treating addiction, depression and anxiety in adolescents and older. I also have experience with trauma informed care, general stress, life changes, family issues, and school related problems. Helping people has always been very important to me.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

In our first session I like to give clients the opportunity to ask me questions, share their goals for therapy (including why they're here) and share any concerns or reservations they may have about the therapy process. I like to know the best/preferred way a client learns and receives information. My goal for the first session is to make the client feel comfortable and begin to build a rapport.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

With 13 years of experience working with those diagnosed with substance use disorders, I do consider this an area of strength. I am knowledgeable and accepting of the many different ways one can achieve sobriety while also bettering their overall mental health. I enjoy helping those with co-occurring substance abuse and mental health diagnoses. I consider my empathy, transparency and open mind to be great strengths and qualities for a therapist.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I find CBT to be extremely helpful to clients during the therapy process as it truly helps them to identify how their thoughts, feelings and behaviors are related to and impact one another. It is a technique that provides an opportunity to stop and take a closer look at each of these areas and through talk therapy, understand where changes can be implemented.

Mindfulness-Based Therapy

Mindfulness based therapy can be particularly helpful when I work with clients who are anxious; be it general anxiety, or anxiety rooted from trauma/PTSD. I use this method to assist clients to be more aware of their thoughts, feelings, emotions, and situation without judgment. The goal is often to decrease automatic responses and become more accepting of what is happening.

Motivational Interviewing

A lot of my experience as a therapist has been in the area of Substance Use Disorders, for which Motivational interviewing can be very beneficial since this is an illness centered on making changes, which can be difficult to do. MI can be used to help treat most mental health conditions as it focuses on the client finding motivation to change. This is a collaborative process with both therapist and client acting as partners, where the ultimate goal is the client finding intrinsic motivation to make positive changes and not just being told what or how to do it.

Psychoeducation

Psychoeducation is a large part of my practice as it truly helps clients (and families) to better understand their illness and subsequently ways to manage and treat the symptoms. Psychoeducation combines elements of CBT along with education. In my experience the more a client knows and understands about what is going on within themselves, the more they will feel confident in implementing skills and being optimistic about getting better.
