The future of medicine moves beyond simply treating symptoms toward preventing disease by identifying root causes and implementing proactive strategies that promote longer, healthier, and more fulfilling lives. This philosophy reflects the transition from Medicine 2.0 to Medicine 3.0, as described by Peter Attia, M.D., in Outlive (2023). A root cause refers to the underlying biological, physiological, environmental, or psychosocial mechanism that initiates and perpetuates disease, rather than the downstream symptoms or diagnostic labels that emerge from it. In both medicine and psychiatry, the root cause represents the primary driver of pathophysiology — the upstream factor that, when properly addressed, can improve or resolve multiple symptoms simultaneously. Within psychiatry, root causes are best understood as biological or neurophysiological disruptions that alter brain signaling networks governing mood, cognition, behavior, and perception. Psychiatric diagnoses describe observable patterns of behavior and experience; root-cause medicine seeks to understand and correct the underlying brain biology producing those patterns. This philosophy serves as the foundation of my functional and nutritional psychiatry practice, informs my personal lifestyle, and guides my ongoing research and professional education. I am particularly committed to working with individuals who are motivated to address the upstream drivers of complex psychiatric conditions, including emerging challenges such as Long COVID.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

One of the most common things new clients share with me is, “This is the first time I feel a medical provider is truly listening without judgment.” My goal is always to meet each person exactly where they are in their journey. To support this approach, every client completes a comprehensive assessment packet, which I carefully review alongside meaningful, person-centered conversation. Together, these elements allow me to develop a clear and thorough understanding of each client’s history, priorities, and health goals, forming the foundation for individualized care.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

Here is a refined rewrite that improves **flow, clarity, and professional warmth** while preserving your authentic voice and relational emphasis: --- The greatest compliment I can receive is when a client chooses to refer their family and friends. When I ask new clients what brought them to my practice, I often hear, *“I was told you genuinely care about your clients and that you never stop learning.”* I take great pride in the progress and successes of those in my care, as well as in the meaningful improvements they experience in their health and well-being. Clients frequently express appreciation for the time I dedicate to truly understanding who they are — their histories, concerns, and personal goals. This process begins with active listening and is supported by comprehensive data gathering, followed by the development of a thoughtful, evidence-informed treatment plan that remains flexible and individualized. My goal is for every client to experience our work together as a collaborative partnership — one built on trust, curiosity, and a shared commitment to whole-person health and lasting well-being.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

I enjoy working with clients who are motivated to improve their overall health and well-being and who value proactive, sustainable approaches focused on disease prevention and long-term vitality. I work best with individuals who actively engage in their care and participate as partners in the shared process of restoring and optimizing health. Rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all model, I take an individualized, whole-person approach to care. I view the body as an integrated system, recognizing that physical, mental, and emotional health are interconnected — not a collection of isolated organs or symptoms to be treated independently.

My treatment methods

Strength-Based

I employ a whole-body approach to optimize brain health and function, guided by the principles of metabolic psychiatry. After decades in healthcare, I have a deep understanding of the critical interplay between the body and the brain, and this relationship forms the foundation of every treatment plan I develop.

I could say this over and over again, Carl is one of the best providers I’ve seen and have been able to work with. He doesn’t just look at one symptom, he looks at everything and actually listens to what you’re saying. He provides you with tons of resources and education on the “why” you should/shouldn’t take something or not take something. If you’re looking for a well rounded and knowledgeable provider, this is your guy!!
