I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Counselor Educator & Supervisor specializing in racial and health equity for Black, and Indigenous, and People of Color. With over a decade of direct care in behavioral health and two years of experience in research, I aspire to adapt therapeutic approaches to effectively treat diverse populations; Understanding cultural, historical, and societal factors that shape the human experience, our sense of being, meaning and purpose, and relationships is core to my clinical approach. Clients can expect to learn about and explore all aspects of their identity. They exercise autonomy as a means of being empowered to promote equity in the therapeutic relationship and in our sessions. Clients can anticipate that I as a counselor will seek to learn about and incorporate aspects of their culture to be both informed, sensitive, and to exercise humility. We will collaborate to develop and refine treatment goals, constantly seeking to incorporate client's individual strengths and when available, collective strengths of those they have relationships with. I will strive to assist all clients in self-actualizing, identifying meaning, and creating innovative solutions to achieve purpose.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

In our first session, clients can expect to be oriented to the nature and purpose of the therapeutic relationship. Clients will verbally review the informed consent, protocols for crises and key personnel to contact, safety measures, and information provided in the intake. I will orient clients to my philosophy about human nature, behavioral healthy, and therapeutic approaches. Clients will be given ample opportunities to engage and identify additional information needed as we proceed; Clients will be informed of their right to access information and be informed and involved in all aspects of their care. An initial treatment plan will be developed for the first 30 days of care in addition to a safety plan and consents for emergency contacts. Clients will be informed on the risks and benefits of counseling, the role of the counselor and their role as the client, and how the relationship will be leveraged to promote collaboration on treatment goals and desired outcomes. Clients can expect an environment that supports client autonomy, fosters partnership and collaboration, empowerment, transparency, and one that is present-oriented.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

Personal experience has allowed me to actively be in a stage of seeking meaning, purpose, and striving towards fulfillment.

My treatment methods

Racial trauma treatment

African Psychology is an approach that will be utilized to identify and explore present effects of globalization and colonialism, contributing to historical and trans-generational trauma in persons of the African Diaspora. Dr. Gill assists patients with exploring their racial/ethnic identity, attitudes and beliefs, and stages of identity development with an emphasis on acculturation and assimilation for patients of color. Through this method, Dr. Gill aids clients in furthering their understanding of history, cultures of origin and present identity, and strategies for integration to strengthen sense of self and provide opportunities for belonging.

Narrative

The narrative approach is adapted to serve clients of color with an external locus of control. Dr. Gill assists patients with exploring core beliefs about society and self; Clients are challenged to confront internalized beliefs and undergo a process of separating self from debilitating narratives that have persisted for generations related to their racial, ethnic, and gender identity, sex, religion, socioeconomic status, and other demographic factors. Clients are encouraged to immerse themselves into their culture, adopting new attitudes and beliefs that promote an internal sense of control and empowerment, and ability to effect change.

Culturally Sensitive Therapy

Dr. Gill incorporates Culturally Sensitive Therapy through informed practices. This approach integrates research on marginalized populations including behavioral health and prevalence of conditions, narratives about behavioral health, factors that influence the therapeutic relationship, language and customs regarding treatment of conditions, and traditional and indigenous approaches that clients wish to incorporate in treatment. Central to this approach is identifying and incorporating clients' strengths and being strengths-based.

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is incorporated to practice to explore meaning of emotion and implications for clients in the present. Dr. Gill explores with patients, narratives that shape and influence how they define emotions, nomenclature, physiological manifestations of emotions, and consciousness. Clients are guided during sessions to be intentional in being with self and emotions in the present. Dr. Gill incorporates EFT in family therapy and specifically, with patients of color to enhance emotionally secure attachments and foster familial development.

Existential

Meaning and purpose are core to human existence. Through the use of existentialism, patients are guided to identify cultural factors that have shaped their identity and ultimately, their sense of purpose-their role(s), duties and obligations, sense of responsibility, and what they are to impart on this world in life and in death. Dr. Gill engages her clients using empathy, unconditional positive regard, and aligns with them through partnership as they process incongruence in their aspirations and external expectations. She explores opportunities for detachment, acceptance, and pursuit of meaning and fulfillment from the client's perspective as a means of alleviating psychological and emotional distress and dissonance.
