Hello, My name is Dr. Joyce Mwaniki, a doctoral prepared and board certified family psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner licensed in the states of Texas, New Mexico and New York. I graduated from the University of Alabama in Huntsville with a doctoral degree in nursing practice and from the University of Texas in Arlington with a master’s degree in psychiatric/mental health. I utilize evidence based scientific and holistic approaches to provide patient centered care. I understand the need for a holistic approach to patient care, and consider the interconnectedness of the body, mind and spirit with client’s environment, social/cultural experience, and relationships, when deciding on treatment plans. I have been in the healthcare field for over 15 years with the last 7 + years as a psychiatric/mental health nurse practitioner in both inpatient and outpatient psychiatric settings. I have worked with clients with depression, anxiety, bipolar disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive and compulsive disorder (OCD), ADHD, psychosis, alcohol and other substance use disorders, eating disorders, insomnia among many mental health disorders. My goal is to provide a culturally competent, holistic and wellness focused service that promotes mental health in everyday life.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

Have you been feeling sad, anxious, hopeless, overwhelmed or unheard? You are not alone. It takes a lot of courage to seek out professional services to address what you might be going through right now. I am passionate about helping my clients meet their goals to live a happier life. At the first session, an initial psychiatric evaluation will be done to address onset of symptoms. You will be asked questions about your mental, medical, social and family history. The initial psychiatric evaluation usually lasts from 45-60 minutes to be completed. The detailed information gathered during the first session will help me to make a diagnosis and discuss with you an evidence based treatment plan. Follow-up sessions can take up to 30 minutes and are designed to assess response to treatments, progress towards goals, and address any concerns the client may have. Together, we will set realistic and achievable goals.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

My greatest strength is the ability to build productive and supportive relationships with my clients. I take pride in being compassionate, patient and a good listener who treats all clients with the dignity and respect that they deserve. Together, we will identify the root cause of the problem and develop a personalized treatment plan to meet your needs. I am committed to providing high quality mental health care and supporting you on your journey towards recovery. With over 7 years of experience in both inpatient and outpatient psychiatric/mental health settings, my biggest strength is medication management for the treatment of depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, mood disorders, PTSD, OCD, ADHD, psychosis, and addiction among others.
