Hi, I am a licensed mental health counselor and a licensed addictions specialist in NC. I was born and raised in NY and received my masters in mental health counseling at Marist College in Dutchess County, while raising four beautiful Daughters. I have worked in the counseling field for over 20 years helping my clients and their families heal from the wreckage of addiction and untreated mental health. If you are struggling with addiction, alcoholism, anxiety, mood disorders, and/or family discord I can help. I have worked in the role of psychotherapist, clinical director, and skilled at program development. This all means I have I understand what therapies work for what your needs are. Through my experience I have designed a specific set of topics, assignments, and individualize your treatment plan to fit your goals and hopes for yourself. I hope you will walk your therapy journey with me along side you.
Our first session will begin with us beginning to develop our relationship. While getting to know each other you begin to decide if we are a good fit together and at the same time I will determine if I can help you on your journey. Depending on the length of our first session we will begin to complete an assessment that goes over the various areas of your life. The most important piece is to get to know each other.
My greatest strength is I have been trained in relational counseling. This means the most important part of therapy is for us to develop rapport and trust.
I have a history of working with a diverse demographic from adolescents to older adults that have substance use or mental health recovery goals and I prefer to work with adults. I have worked in programs designed to fit the needs of executives, their families, and high-net worth folks. On the other spectrum I have opened a non-profit treatment center in NY next to a homeless shelter. When an individual is in crisis and reaches out for help the goal is the same; to help and guide the way for that persons success and growth. and need help to develop coping skills. At this point in my career I am focusing on individual therapy only. To make a long story short, I am best to serve those that have a trauma history that could benefit from therapies such as EMDR, DBT, Mindfulness and Eastern Philosophy. I love teaching coping skills and meditation skills from these traditions and have seen people change profoundly during our process together.
I have found that "Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing" (EMDR) therapy has helped my clients achieve their therapy goals much faster than many other methods. Originally developed as a treatment for PTSD it has found to be highly effective treating grief and loss, relationship breakups, substance abuse disorders, childhood traumatic memories, depression, anxiety, mood disorders, increase self-worth and a sense of purpose and meaning for life. After a reprocessing session it is not unusual for a client to report, "I don't know how this is working, but it does, it's amazing."
Are you coming to therapy struggling with difficult emotions, feelings of distress, and interpersonal difficulties at home and work. DBT is a framework based on Mindfulness that provides you concrete skills to thrive in your life rather than just get by. My clients learn about the different states of Mind and how to maintain a grounded sense of Wise Mind when feeling overwhelmed by their struggles whether it is substance abuse, mental health, or behavior related.
I use Gottman Couples Therapy in my private practice as I believe often our individual struggles effect our intimate relationships and the whole family system. I love watching couples and family members heal while the client is actively engaged in the therapy process. Family involvement is always voluntary and not required.
