Sarah is a licensed clinical social worker who provides therapy to individuals across the lifespan, specializing in Trauma. Sarah has spent years working with individuals who have experienced domestic violence, sexual assaults, sexual abuse, and child abuse and neglect. Sarah is also dedicated to supporting LGBT+ individuals and parents of LGBT+ children in growing their understanding of how to lovingly support their child. Sarah understands how hard it can be to take the first step towards reaching out for help. Sarah has worked with individuals who have been hurt, both physically and mentally, by people that they loved and trusted. Some people lived with that pain for decades before reaching out for help. Some people didn't know where to turn for help, other's didn't want to think about what they had experienced and they certainly didn't want to talk about it. Some had tried to reach out for help before, but they were blamed for what happened to them or the way they feel. Some were told to "get over it" or "it wasn't that bad". They had heard these messages from friends, families, religious leaders, and even past therapists. Sarah is a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional and practices Trauma Informed Therapy. The effects of trauma can look like many other mental health diagnoses and people can often be misdiagnosed with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, or Oppositional Defiance Disorder, Generalized Anxiety, or Depression. Sarah practices with cultural humility and therefor is comfortable working with people from many different cultures and backgrounds. Sarah is passionate about equality and equity and works with marginalize and oppressed individuals.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

During our first session I will ask questions to see what you have been struggling with and how it has been impacting your life. I will make sure that you know that I want to hear from you about what your experience has been. Intake sessions are my least favorite since I need to ask specific questions and don't get to hear as much about the answers as I would normally like. After the first session I will follow your lead.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I try to provide an environment where individuals feel free, safe, and supported to openly share any and all thoughts.

Describe the client(s) you are best positioned to serve.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I help individuals explore thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, identifying patterns, and ways to help improve emotions by fixing unhelpful or untrue thoughts.

EMDR

Even after fixing unhelpful or untrue thoughts, it can be hard to believe them if they have stored as part of a trauma memory. Even though you can remind yourself that the thought isn't correct, it will still pop up often. Through EMDR we can prevent the unhelpful cognitions, and other trauma triggers from popping up.

Person-centered (Rogerian)

I believe that every person is different and every person has value. I believe a person centered approach is the most important part of therapy. Therapy sessions are for your healing. I listen to and believe the people I work with and am nonjudgmental of struggles and behaviors that you are not proud of, because I understand that these usually come from a place of surviving difficult situations.
