Hello, I am a Licensed Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and Adult Gerontology Primary care Nurse Practitioner with 8 years experience. I originally did not plan to work in health care as a young man growing up. As a child my parents moved my twin brother and I up in the mountains in Idaho to live off the land and grid. We had lots of chores tending to animals, gardens, some foraging from the forest. I have traveled/lived as a young adult to South America and Mexico gaining a greater appreciation for all that we have in life. Pursued my undergraduate degree in Biology, then life changed a bit and moved back to Florida to live and care give for my grandparents. Living with my grandparents started my journey into healthcare. My grandmother had dementia and I became her live in personal care giver. Eventually we had hospice for her and I witnessed my grandmother pass in her own bed, which was always her request and of course a very significant sad event in my life. During this time I was in nursing school, eventually earned a degree in nursing, worked at St. Joseph Hospital in Tampa for 8 years in the ICU, some ER and PACU. I have experienced many encounters of family members with their loved ones at the bedside in ICU making life and death decisions. I have worked sided by side with palliative care and Hospice understanding, empathizing with the families perspective related to end of life issue. Those experiences have had a significant impact on how I practice today, specifically working with dementia patients at home as outpatient or institutional patients. As well as better able to understand the patients perspective with other common mental illnesses.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

Primarily learn why they are seeing me today, Listen to their concerns, validate those concerns, diagnose the issues, and formulate a treatment plan either psychotherapy, psychotropics, or both.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

Patience, empathy, altruism, I will tell people things they may not want to hear but in a soft gentle manner. I am an optimist, I enjoy motivating clients to help them see their potential and or self defeating behaviors. I focus on overall health not just therapy and psychotropics.

My treatment methods

Motivational Interviewing

Typically with my clients I first inquire as to why they are feeling a certain way, once I can understand their point of view I can adapt my interviewing techniques toward motivational interviewing. Acknowledging some positive aspects of their lives, focusing on their mindset, what are the obstacles they are encountering, and how to move past these obstacles. I try to facilitate the client to realize their issues without telling them. I like to inspire clients using profound quotes or other educational materials from journal articles and educating clients on how specific psychotropic works in the body. I encourage clients to consume a healthy diet, quality sleep, address underlying medical concerns if they may be contributing to their chief complaint, along with exercise as tolerated Give optimistic perspectives when appropriate. Teach accountability from their choices and where they are now in their lives. Reflect their concerns back to them to validate their issues and understanding. Use open-ended questions with the goal of self discovery.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Attempt to help clients changes their thinking patterns via learning to recognize their distorted thinking which may be creating problems. Teaching betters ways of coping with problems. Presenting understanding of the behaviors and motivations of others and how that may influence the client. Using problem solving skills to better cope with specific situations. Develop ways to increase their confidence, facing one's fears vs avoiding them. Teaching relaxation techniques, emphasizing improvements to their overall health and well being. Giving doable homework assignments so clients can gain better insight into their issues.
