Hello! I am a licensed psychologist practicing in Savannah, GA. I grew up in Indiana and got my B.S. from Purdue University. I did my graduate training at Point Park University in Pittsburgh, PA. I moved down to GA about three years ago and I love it! I split my clinical time between providing psychotherapy and conducting neuropsychological and psychological assessments. My therapeutic passion is working with people who are unsatisfied or uncertain with relationships, personal self, or life. I believe that the first step to change and growth is awareness. As such, my treatment approach focuses on getting to know the person inside and helping clients better understand themselves. With awareness, I find we can make decisions that are more authentic to ourselves and facilitate a life that is more fulfilling. I have gotten a wide variety of experience over the years. A portion of my training was with college-aged students. I also provided therapeutic care to all ages during graduate training via community mental health and residential settings. My post-graduate specialty was in psychological assessment. In my current clinic, I work with adults suffering from relational issues, self issues, trauma, depression, anxiety, ADHD, and other mental health symptom presentation, as well as older adults for issues of cognitive change.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

I like to spend my first session getting a surface level understanding of the whole you. We will dive into the deeper things in follow up sessions. I will begin with introductions and then I will ask you to provide some narrative of your presenting concerns. I will ask about other aspects of you life and then spend some time collaborating on treatment goals. I will leave time for questions and may make suggestions of coping skills or reflections to review in between sessions.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I think what makes me and my therapeutic approach unique is that I value looking beyond the symptoms a person is experiencing. I believe mental health symptoms, regardless of their presentation, are communications our body and mind are trying to make to us. I want to help you understand the source of your symptoms, so you can make decisions that remediate the need for the symptoms, rather than only learn skills to mask the symptoms. While I think there are several very useful coping skills that are needed at various points in life, I believe if we get at the source of the symptoms, there is a better chance of reducing symptom severity and ultimately, improving satisfaction in life. Another thing that I think makes me unique is from a philosophical standpoint, I believe the life experience includes both joy and suffering. In a society that works very hard to minimize or transfer suffering, I think we have lost our ability to integrate pain into our whole experience. While it is natural to want to minimize pain, I believe that if we give room for the pain to present and process, we can feel more balanced and less distressed. If we minimize pain, we also minimize joy. As such, I believe balance and acceptance of both negative and aspects of life is what helps us live more fulfilled and satisfactory lives.

My treatment methods

Humanistic

My treatment approach pulls from several third-wave psychological theories and modalities (e.g., Experiential Personal Construct Psychology, Interpersonal Psychology, Existential Psychology, Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow). I find value in finding meaning and believe that relationships and constructs of self and other highly influence what meaning we make of our lives and our experiences. My interventions usually hone in on differentiating personal beliefs and experiences from others' and larger contexts. I believe this approach helps clients understanding their personal desires and helps them facilitate a life that is more authentic, satisfactory, and fulfilling.

Trauma Informed Care

Much of my clinical and research background specializes in trauma theory and treatment. In particular, I wrote my doctoral dissertation on the relatively new theory and practice of Post-Traumatic Growth. I hold a special passion working with people with complex trauma (e.g., relational injuries from caregivers or long-term relationships with emotional/verbal/psychological abuse). I also have experience treating physical and sexual abuse victims and have worked with many active military and veterans with service-related trauma

Mindfulness-Based Therapy

I believe mindfulness is the most useful coping skill for trauma and other mental health symptom presentation. Mindfulness has been shown to be one of the most effective coping skills for mental health symptoms due to the cognitive, affective, and physiological benefits it allows. Additionally, mindfulness allows a person to reflect and become more aware of internal processes, which I believe helps us better understand ourselves and make decisions that promote overall well-being.

Neurofeedback

For the past two years, I have been conducting neuropsychological assessments for adult and aging populations. I have taken advanced coursework and reviewed research regarding cognitive health throughout the lifespan. While I do not provide neurofeedback as it is traditionally practiced, I do provide cognitive therapy for rehabilitation cognitive inefficiency and educative counseling for cognitive functioning prolongment.
