Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

I would like you to ask me questions, let me know your expectations and start off with your primary concern so we can work together with the rest of your healthcare team and your support network in synergy to develop a treatment plan for wellness.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

Most psychiatrist will focus on medication management but I enjoy helping you gain insight into your situation, set goals for care, and use a variety of tools to help you heal. I was trained in hypnosis and then hypnotherapy and well versed in helping you learn tools you can use for health, wellness and pain management. Hypnotherapy works well for addiction and anxiety as well as sleep alone or in conjunction with medications.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

I enjoy working with multiple generations. I have worked with children in play therapy over virtual telehealth sessions and helped families heal from trauma, understand learning differences, assist the teen or young adult transitioning from High School to higher education and/or work. I have a special interest in transitioning from life to death and working through the various feeling, thinking, physical issues. Having served in the US military after graduating from Penn State ROTC (1986), I greatly enjoy helping active service members, families and Veterans with their unique challenges. Although my medical school (Hahnemann Universty now known as Drexel University) was in Center City Philadelphia I had multiple medical rotations throughout rural Pennsylvania. I am a medical physician comfortable with unusual conditions who can help you improve you mental and spiritual (as you understand it) health and well being. Medication management is what's expected but I'd like to provide you a bit more so you can be the most successful and comfortable version of you!

My treatment methods

Hypnotherapy

I have used guided imagery, relaxation breathing, meditation and hypnosis (memory, sleep, pain, addiction among other therapeutic uses) for many years even before becoming a psychologist. Exploring levels of consciousness and dreams can be just as effective as medications if not more so. I have used hypnosis as primary or an adjunct to anesthesia. I can teach you how to use self hypnosis to improve your life.

Cognitive Processing (CPT)

I was trained in CPT (and CBT) while serving in the US Army. I believe in flexibility and will use "behavioral" work to augment supportive therapy (Roger's Positive Emotional Regard) and medication management. I have used behavior therapies since my undergraduate days at Penn State (1982-86).

Child Parent Psychotherapy

Although I am General Adult and Geriatric Psychiatry trained I have extensive experiences in Addiction Medicine including child and adolescent work. I am ABPN certified in Child Psychiatry. I have worked with diverse populations and having lived/worked in Korea and Hawaii for many years (10 plus) am acutely aware of parent child issues and cultural dynamics of blending competing cultural values and expectations. My training program in Child, Adolescent and Family Psychiatry at the Medical College of Georgia (combined with Eisenhower Army Medical Center) allowed me to learn about how rural medicine in the South differs yet is similar to the Northern Appalachia medicine I grew up with. These diverse experiences have allowed me to help families work through a myriad of issues. I am well versed in marital, parent-child, and family (to include multigenerational) therapies.

Motivational Interviewing

I use motivational interviewing in my addiction work as well as working with adolescents or young adults who are challenged with taking medications, attending therapy, working on diet and exercise. There are stages of change and I can help you prepare for and tackle the changes you want. I have used this model extensively during my 35 plus years of medical practice.
