Hello there! My name is Marianna Skidmore. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Virginia, and I’m excited to help you navigate life’s ups and downs! Since this is a secondary role for me, my availability is currently limited only to Mondays. I want to be sure you’re aware of this before scheduling to make the most of our time together. Outside of being a therapist, I’m a dog mom, an artist, and a wife. While I don’t have children myself—and I understand that’s important for some to know—I am here to support you, even if I don’t share the experience of parenthood. I do know what it’s like to be a patient; I sought therapy in my 20s while trying to navigate life's challenges. I’ve experienced the frustration of working hard without seeing immediate results. Growing up in Southwest Virginia, deep in the Appalachian Mountains, I’ve seen struggle and have felt hopeless about my path at times. I became a therapist to create a supportive space for others, much like the one I wished for myself during those difficult times.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

The first appointment is a bit different from a typical therapy session—think of it as our "getting to know you" session. We'll discuss your history, explore what brings you to therapy, and start outlining a treatment plan. We'll also handle some necessary administrative tasks, like discussing confidentiality and completing paperwork. Don’t worry—this is the only session with a significant amount of paperwork, and I aim to make it as straightforward and comfortable as possible for you!

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I bring humor, optimism, and a down-to-earth approach to our sessions. When you meet me, you’re meeting the real me—no pretenses. I believe in being authentic because I want you to feel at ease and be your true self, too!

Person-centered (Rogerian)

I’m all about Person-Centered therapy because I believe you’re the true expert in your own journey. Think of me as your co-pilot in this adventure, helping you map out what you want from therapy. You get to call the shots on how often we meet and what we focus on. It’s all about working together to make sure the process fits you perfectly!

EMDR

I’ve received formal training in EMDR, a powerful trauma treatment that has made a significant difference for many people dealing with various types of trauma. While I am always Person-Centered in my approach and may suggest EMDR if it seems like a good fit for your needs, the choice to pursue it is entirely up to you. Your preferences and comfort are my top priority!

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

CBT is a fantastic tool for managing those pesky thoughts that can get in the way of reaching your goals. I find it really useful for helping you overcome obstacles, but it’s just one part of my approach. I like to blend it with other methods to create a plan that’s as unique as you are. We’ll work together to find what works best for you!
