My name is Carla and I am an LCSW in California with over 15 years of experience working as a medical social worker and psychotherapist. I worked in schools, community mental health agencies and hospitals, and am fluent in Tagalog. As a Filipina/Malaysian therapist, my mission is to provide you with culturally responsive and trauma-informed care that acknowledges all the systems in place which impact your emotional health and well-being. I firmly believe that social work focuses on both on the person and their environment. As an LCSW, I can help you manage not only with how you feel about a situation, but also empower you with what you can do about it. I also want to acknowledge that there are many factors and complexities that intersect to make you who you are is an important perspective of my practice. You define who you are and how you experience the world.
Our first session would mostly be me asking what lead you to seeking therapy at this time? I am very big on establishing rapport and creating a safe space to empower you to be who you truly are.
I want clients to feel safe from harm, discrimination and aggression. While I believe that therapy can be beneficial, I am aware of the systemic inequities that play a role and affect the mental health of BIPOC and other often marginalized communities.
I want to help my clients with putting in the hard work of introspection and exploring their environment in order to help define how they perceive the world and how they can change that to help protect their peace. This is a collaborative effort on both yours and mine. If you are ready to do the work, I am ready to serve.
My counseling style is compassionate and empowering. I want to look at all the systems in place that impact your emotional health and well-being. I firmly believe in starting where the client is and that you are the captain of your own ship. I am just here to help guide the way. The answers are within you and I will do my best to help you get them out.
I utilize (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) as an evidence-based psychotherapy that can facilitate healing from symptoms caused by traumatic and disturbing life events.
Motivational Interviewing focuses on exploration and resolving ambivalence while focusing on the motivational processes within the individual that can foster change.
I obtained my BA in Women's Studies and maintain an understanding of the intersectionality that gender, race, sexuality, orientation and other often marginalized identities play with regards to mental health. I utilize a critical lens to understand and unlearn many social norms that were taught to us.
