Hello! My legal name is Derrick Freyman, LMSW-C, but my chosen name is Freddie Wyatt. I am a non-binary, queer, and neurodivergent therapist dedicated to upholding gender-affirming, sex-positive, and social justice values both in my practice and my personal life. I earned my MSW from Michigan State University, and for the past 12 years I have served a diverse expanse of clients in educational, private practice, nonprofit, and healthcare settings. Providing effective LGBTQ+ healthcare is my primary specialization, and many of my clients face challenges ranging from anxiety and depression to complex trauma and relationship problems. Cultivating a warm and authentic therapeutic alliance is central to my approach, and I offer an integrated perspective which draws from trauma-informed Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and mindfulness-based Dialectical Behavioral Therapy couched together within an Existential-Humanistic framework. When I’m not in session, I might be reviewing professional literature related to my eventual dissertation topic area, existential isolation and clinical concerns in marginalized groups. I might also be blogging, playing music, or gaming with my spouse. Feel free to book an initial consultation or appointment to see if working together would be a good fit for you.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

The first session is all about getting to know each other and making sure our connection feels like a good fit. I will be asking questions about your background and what brings you to therapy at this time, but I will respect your boundaries and pace in the conversation.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

My own lived experience with mental health enhances my ability to relate to others with greater compassion, authenticity, and humility. People always tell me I have a very calming voice and demeanor, which helps when talking about stressful topics. I have also been told that I have a good sense of humor and know how to use it to keep the conversation balanced.

Describe the client(s) you are best positioned to serve.

My practice is primarily dedicated to serving LGBTQ+ and allied communities. At this time I work with adults on an individual basis.

My treatment methods

Gender-affirming therapy

As a non-binary clinician with additional training in gender-affirming therapy, I am passionate about supporting clients of all genders wherever they are at on their respective journeys, whether they are taking steps toward self-discovery or navigating challenges with family, relationships, or society.

Trauma-Focused CBT

The basis of my approach to therapy is rooted in CBT, a method that emphasizes the connection between our thoughts and feelings on our behavior. I bring a trauma-informed perspective to help my clients move forward from harmful experiences by reframing the meaning or lessons we derive from those experiences into something more constructive and empowering.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT)

DBT is a mindfulness-based, skills-heavy conceptualization of CBT, and I have additional training in the skills training portion of the DBT model. I draw on skills from the DBT model when clients need additional support coping with interpersonal challenges and self-regulation.
