Hi there, I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and I specialize in working with adults of all ages on a range of issues from grief, life transitions, family conflict, spirituality, trauma, and LGBTQIA+ issues. I am excited to be offering EMDR for trauma, as well as a strengths-based approach and culturally relevant psychotherapy that looks at you as a whole person, not just a series of symptoms. Hola!

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

In our first session, we will both assess if we are a good fit for one another. I always want to ensure that I have the right skillset to assist you with your mental health goals. I will ask some getting to know you questions, learn a little bit more about what is bringing you to therapy at this moment in time, as well as to discuss what goals you have for treatment. You will also have a chance to ask me any questions about how I work as as therapist and what to expect out of therapy with me. I also like to discuss past experiences you have had with therapy and how best I can support you.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I am able to meet clients where they are at with a non-judgmental stance as we get into the muddy waters of healing what wants to be healed. I am trained in numerous evidence based practices that are able to reduce symptoms and at the same time I take a holistic approach that considers your whole self (body, mind, and spirit) while developing treatment goals.

My treatment methods

Positive Psychology

Much of the psychological world focuses on what is going 'wrong' with people. Positive psychology focuses on people's strengths and finding solutions in order to live more meaningful lives. In utilizing this approach, we will focus on things such as culitivating happiness, fulfilment, improving quality of life and identifying character strengths as tools to overcome obstacles that are in your life. Positive psychology emphasizes moving from surviving to thriving. It's not that we ignore your symptoms but rather utilize your strengths to overcome them.

EMDR

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is a treatment technique that can help people heal from trauma or other distressing life experiences. I utilize this modality to assist people healing from trauma and PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder). EMDR is focused less on talking to process traumatic events and instead utilizes bilateral stimulation to help you reprocess traumatic memories. This is a great option for clients who feel like they are getting "stuck" with traditional talk therapy or have not had an improvement of PTSD symptoms through more traditional therapy modalities.

Culturally Sensitive Therapy

I am especially trained to work with folks with marginalized identities, whether that be on the basis of gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, etc. In our sessions, we will look at how the cultures you come from intersect with the mental health symptoms you are experiencing. In other words, mental health doesn't exist in a vacuum and we will look at things like how oppression in your life may also negatively impact your well-being. Culturally sensitive therapy is also a strength based approach, meaning we will tap into your resilience to help you cope with oppression in your daily life. Doy terapia en español o Spanglish también.

Gender-affirming therapy

As a member of the LGBTQ+ community myself, I provide gender affirming therapy that assists people of diverse gender experiences in understanding themselves and their gender identities more completely. I welcome folks who may be questioning their gender identity for the first time, as well as those who are further along in their gender journeys. In gender affirming therapy, we will also look at how gender identity intersects with mental health symptoms and will identify tools to help you cope with oppression you may experience in the world.
