I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with over two decades of experience providing counseling services to individuals, families, and teens. With life being so faced paced its easy to not know who we are and what is our purpose. Adding to this is our own past traumas that interfere with relationships and the ability to manage day to day. I want to help you come to a better understanding of yourself. I want you to be able to love yourself, appreciate life, and have the ability to be your true self. When you end therapy I want you to be able to control intense emotions and not the emotions controlling you. Creating your own definition of freedom and inner peace.
During our initial session, I will focus on getting to know you and allowing you to tell your story. I will be patient and compassionate toward your needs. We will work together to determine your therapy goals, and how we can begin managing intense feelings. I usually end the session with giving you practical skills to start applying in your life.
My greatest strengths as a provider is using humor in sessions because I believe humor is healing to the soul. As a provider I like to be creative with my interventions I provide to clients and I choose interventions that are unique to the client's strengths, values, and beliefs.
For clients with trauma it is my usual practice to provide EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) which is a technique which reprocesses the trauma. This is a very effective evidenced based technique for treating trauma. I also utilize another technique for processing trauma which is called Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT). CPT identifies unhelpful thoughts that are keeping you stuck in the trauma. This therapy is usually delivered in about 12 sessions. For other clients I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) which focus on the how your maladaptive thoughts influence your feelings and behaviors and creating new thoughts which are healthier and help you move forward. In addition we explore your past and how it relates to your current behaviors and situations. The clients that would be most suitable for me to provide services are clients with a trauma background, first responders (law enforcement, nurses, doctors, firefighters), and military. I also provide services to clients going through transitions, relationship issues, men issues, women issues, and issues around spirituality.
EMDR is a practice I use to re-process traumas and reduce the intensity of feelings and or emotions associated with the trauma. This method does not look like traditional talk therapy.
I use CPT for trauma by helping clients thoughts that are keeping them from progressing. I work with clients are challenging these thoughts and identifying problematic ways of thinking that are keeping them stuck.
I use CBT to help clients identifying habitual thoughts patterns that are unhealthy and replacing them with more healthier thoughts which lead to changes in how the client feel about themselves, which lead to changes in behaviors.
