Hello, I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Texas with 2 years of counseling experience and 18 years working as a teacher and administrator. As a former athlete and current sports coach, my style of counseling is to listen, ask questions for understanding and exploration/reflection for the client, motivate, and help someone use the tools & talents hidden inside of people to find their healing and solutions. Not all solutions are perfect, but it takes work to heal, understand, process issues, and move forward successfully. I have a lot of patience, thanks to working in education, but I work to understand the client's personality and motivate them to take steps for changes.
In the first session, the counselor will ask a few questions to get an understanding of what issues the client is aware of and experiencing. In subsequent sessions, clients may have "homework" to help them stay on track for healing and understanding, until the next session. Clients are able to ask questions to the counselor to help them feel comfortable, however, laws and ethical practices do limit this information.
Working in the education system, I have come across individuals and families from nearly every background imaginable, especially in Texas. This has helped me to have a culturally sensitive mindset when dealing with others whose beliefs differ from my own. In addition, as a former athlete and current coach, I have experience and knowledge of what current and former athletes go through, along with using this knowledge to help ANYONE move forward with confidence. Clients don't have to have ever played a sport to benefit from gentle coaching that looks to listen and understand.
I would prefer to work with clients ages 15 and up, including older clients. My clients may not be fully motivated, hurting, those dealing with emotional dysregulation (anger, sadness, worry, etc.), but it is my goal to help them see their truth and find their healing and motivation. I have experience in working at an IOP/PHP step-down from hospitalization, where one other therapist and I helped those dealing with OCD, GAD, Depression, ODD, anger, fear, addictions, low self-esteem, relationship issues, severe trauma, identity confusion, small traumas that can affect someone for decades, and more. Current or former athletes are also a specialty of mine due to my work with those at the high school, collegiate, and professional levels. Clients who need one-on-one treatment and care through counseling usually have nagging issues that they cannot resolve on their own; or, they have just been releases from a higher level of care mental health facility.
If a client has a specific faith or belief system, I can help them use that belief system in therapy to both build a relationship with their higher power and use the knowledge/wisdom to find their healing. Christian, Catholic, Muslim, and Buddhist are more adaptable for clinician.
My main forms of therapy involve Culturally Sensitive, CBT, DBT, Couples counseling, EFT, Jungian, Art, Person-centered, and Reality therapies, amongst others. Every person and their situations are different so eclectic is sometimes necessary.
