New to Grow
My name is Dr. Jenny Tanis and I am a clinical psychologist passionate about creating a safe, affirming space my for clients to explore their inner worlds. I have a background in education and working with children and families, and have done so for over twenty years. I have also served as a children's yoga instructor and teacher trainer. I continue to work with children, teens, and families in my practice but also enjoy working with individuals of all ages. I spent several training years training in college counseling centers and really enjoy this exploratory phase of life. I have experience teaching courses in career counseling and helping guide individuals towards careers that make sense for them. Additionally, I have personal experience navigating deep grief and loss, and hold it very close to my heart to help guide individuals through this delicate time in their lives. My goal is to help clients of all ages overcome the barriers preventing them from living their most fulfilling lives.
In our first session together, here's what you can expect
My first sessions focus on what brought you to therapy. What is going on that you'd like to better understand, and how can we make sense of it together. This session often includes some information gathering such as learning about a client's family or upbringing, current relationships, and current level of functioning. If it makes sense, a brief assessment or two may be completed.
The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions
I have heard from several client's before that if they couldn't do therapy with me they would not continue. While I would never encourage that, I have been able to provide a therapeutic experience that has felt different for many clients than therapy has felt in the past. I believe this is due to creating a strong and collaborative therapeutic relationship; and that the relationship that develops between client and therapist is in itself healing. I incorporate humor, art, music, nature, and client's special interests into the therapy process. It is important to be to be a healing space for individuals who have had negative therapy experiences in the past.
The clients I'm best positioned to serve
My ideal client is ready to learn more about themselves, even if they aren't quite sure what that means yet. They know something in their life feels off, and they'd like something to change. They are looking for a consistent, supportive, and nonjudgmental person to help them navigate the challenges they are facing, and help them to hold the hope that things will improve.
Humanistic
I believe a genuine and non judgemental relationship is integral to therapeutic success. My goal is to help clients identify where they want to go and help them to overcome the barriers getting in the way.
