Hello, I'm Jamesia Mathis, a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Professional Counselor Supervisor based in Georgia. With over 8 years of dedicated practice, I've had the privilege of working across various mental health settings, including crisis stabilization, partial-hospitalization, intensive-outpatient, and outpatient programs, serving both adolescents and adults. I firmly believe that one's thoughts and emotions significantly impact their behaviors. I am passionate about helping individuals build awareness of negative thinking patterns and maladaptive behaviors to initiate positive change. In our therapeutic journey together, I work collaboratively with you to explore your current struggles and past experiences, aiming to identify the root causes of your challenges and guide you toward greater peace and happiness.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

The first therapy session is often referred to as the intake session or initial assessment. It is our opportunity to begin building a strong therapeutic alliance and laying the groundwork for effective treatment. It sets the stage for ongoing exploration, growth, and healing in the therapeutic journey. I will explain the principles of confidentiality and informed consent, outlining the limits of confidentiality and the exceptions in cases where there may be a risk of harm to you, the client, or others. I invite you to discuss their reasons for seeking therapy and what they hope to achieve. This may involve exploring current challenges, symptoms, concerns, relevant personal history, and life experiences.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

My journey in counseling has led me to develop a comprehensive understanding of various mental health concerns. I specialize in substance misuse, depression, anxiety, mood disorders, trauma/abuse, relationship issues, grief, self-harm, and suicidal ideations. Through my experience, I've honed my skills in providing individual and group counseling, tailoring my approach to meet the unique needs of each client.

My treatment methods

EMDR

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. I have

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Cognitive behavioral therapy, also known as CBT, is one of the most common and effective types of psychotherapy. It’s an extremely versatile type of therapy and can be used as a structure to treat a variety of mental health issues and emotional and behavioral problems. By incorporating CBT techniques and principles into my therapy practice, I continue to empower clients to overcome anxiety, depression, grief, and trauma-related challenges and achieve lasting improvements in their mental health and well-being.

Cognitive Processing (CPT)

The goal of CPT is to teach clients to recognize these thoughts and beliefs, which are referred to as “stuck points.” These stuck points are the reason why clients with trauma continue to feel emotionally distressed long after the traumatic event has ended. I have reached my provider status with this treatment modality via Stong Star Training Institute.

Motivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a compassionate, supportive counseling method focused on encouraging personal growth and change. This approach, as outlined in Behavioral and Cognitive Psychotherapy, is a purposeful, client-focused way of engaging individuals to address and navigate their uncertainties towards change.

Supportive

Supportive psychotherapy is mostly focused on helping you work through present and immediate concerns, including relationship issues, family conflicts, or work-related stress.
