Hi guys, my name is Dr. Tara Thompson, and I am a Psychiatric Nurse practitioner. Interesting story….I actually began my career as a therapist after earning degrees from the University of Pittsburgh and Eastern University. After working in behavioral health for a few years I decided to pursue a career in nursing (as if I wasn’t challenged enough) and earned additional undergraduate and graduate degrees in Nursing from Gwynedd Mercy University and Drexel University, and later a Doctor of Nursing from Drexel University (please don’t tell the student loan people where to find me....unless they want to forgive them!) Throughout this (very expensive) journey, I have learned that people are multi-faceted and understanding their lives and experiences requires me to look at treatment from multiple perspectives including psychological, biological, developmental, and cultural. Listen, living in today’s world isn’t easy, which is why I believe in nurturing the capacity for resilience and growth to manage stress and adversity. What that looks like, we can decide together!
What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?
You can expect that you will be asked the reason you’re coming in (to the virtual office) to see me. Being asked open-ended questions might make you nervous, especially if you don’t know where to begin or how to start. Just know that there’s truly no wrong way to answer and I will guide you through the assessment. If your needs can be met in an outpatient telehealth setting, we will develop a treatment plan and work together. If you need additional support or more specialized care I will help to identify those needs as well.
Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.
I am a nurse practitioner, but I am also a trained psychotherapist, while I no longer offer therapy, it continues to be the foundation for which I assess and manage the needs, not just the symptoms of my patients.
