I have been a Registered Nurse since 2006 and pursued a graduate nursing degree with a psychiatric specialty after more than 10 years of working in health care and seeing the negative impact of our fragmented mental health care system. I have been a Board-Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) since 2018 and offer comprehensive mental health assessments, supportive talk therapy, and prescription medication management when appropriate.
Our first session with be focused on getting to know each other and how I may be able to support you. We will discuss your goals, mental and physical health history; and other important parts of your life including work, family, personal interests, and lifestyle. This will be an introductory session. If it seems like a good mutual fit, we will then formulate a plan for working together to optimize your mental health.
I bring my authentic self to every session and have been described as warm, empathetic, and detail-oriented with excellent listening skills and out-of-the box thinking. Patient/client advocacy and safety are my top priorities and I offer patient/client-centered care that is strengths-based, non-pathologizing and collaborative.
I work with adults (18-65 yrs of age) and my primary areas of clinical focus are mood disorders (including bipolar spectrum disorders), anxiety, and trauma. I find the most fulfillment working with people who have been traumatized by our health care system and are motivated to feel well but don't know where to turn or how to start. I also enjoy working with people with autoimmune disorders and have lived experience in this area. Psychiatry is often thought to be synonymous with prescription medication, but this does not reflect my style or philosophy. I want to know you as a whole person to best support you in establishing and meeting your mental health goals. People who want to take a deep dive to explore all options to feel well will be the best fit for my practice. I have special interest and training in nutritional/integrative psychiatry and perinatal mental health. My approach to care is collaborative, holistic, and eclectic. If you are looking for a very comprehensive assessment, close follow-up, and a therapeutic alliance, my style will likely work for you. I also welcome LGBTQ+ people with open arms and want potential patients to know that my psychiatry practice is firmly rooted in health equity, anti-racism, and social justice. Outside of work, I engage with activism against oppression, discrimination, injustice, and genocide whenever possible. If you are seeking a brief assessment with primary focus on prescription medication management, I will not be the right provider. Please note I do not prescribe stimulants like Adderall and Ritalin and I am not an ADHD specialist.
I utilize a mix of IFS-informed and mindfulness-focused supportive talk therapy, lifestyle and nutrition counseling when desired, and prescription medications when appropriate. I have foundational training in Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy. I am not certified in this modality, but am very familiar with it and blend it into supportive therapy for many of my patients. I especially appreciate the non-pathologizing nature of this modality.
Not everyone needs or wants longterm mental health treatment/support. Sometimes coaching and solution-focused treatment is most appropriate.
