Hi, I am Kamala, a FL LMHC. I received my undergraduate degree in Psychology at Jacksonville University in 2003 and my master's in Professional Counseling from Liberty University in 2015. I have worked as a mental health counselor for five years. However, I have been in the field of helping people for 18 years, starting as a case manager at a homeless shelter and later as a special education teacher. What can I can say? People are my niche. Helping individuals get through life's difficulties is my purpose. The thing about it is, we may not be able to live 100% symptom-free, but we can live productive, fulfilling lives even with some discomfort. That may sound daunting, but I think it's realistic. Do you know why? Because even when we get through one thing, another thing is somewhere on the timeline waiting. I'm here to help you get through your "thing" now and prepare you for your "thing" later. Hope to meet you soon.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

The first session is where we start to build rapport. We will begin this process by making short introductions and reviewing limits of confidentiality. Additionally, we will complete or review your assessment (depending on if you've completed prior to the session). Grow Therapy's assessment is a 16 question assessment that explains your reason for therapy, family history, and other significant questions that will help me to get to know more about you and in the development of the treatment plan. Afterwards, we will work together to develop your treatment plan.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

Life can be difficult, so coming alongside and helping you navigate through the murkiness of it is my niche. I try to make the sessions as comfortable and natural flowing as possible. I am easy going and able to adjust to the flow of the session to the pace of the client. In addition to my education, I have years of practical experience that gives me confidence working with clients. Lastly, I am nice. That may be a funny thing to say, but it comes in handy. However, am also stern when I need to be.

My treatment methods

Christian Counseling

I attended Liberty University where I learned counseling integration. I have been trained to work with Christians and non-Christians alike utilizing counseling integration which incorporates Biblical truths with "secular counseling" without compromising the Biblical standard.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is a therapy that works with clients to identify negative thinking patterns and structure healthier thinking. CBT is one of the most, if not the most, popular talk therapies and has a high success rate of working with clients across multiple mental health diagnoses and/or life issues.

Acceptance and commitment (ACT)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a therapy utilized to help clients Accept that life will have problems while maintaining or gaining Commitment towards living a values-driven/rich and fulfilling life. ACT may be helpful where traditional Cognitive Behavior Therapy has not been as effective for the client.

Psychoeducation

Each client will receive psychoeducation, as needed, throughout our time working together. Psychoeducation is a strategy used in counseling to teach the client about mental health issues they are experiencing. It can also help clients explain their mental health to their loved ones.
