As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, I help individuals cope with the stressors of early adulthood, parenting, and being stuck in the "sandwich generation," caring for children and older relatives, with little or no time for self care. I have particular experience working with parents of children with special needs. My approach is always strengths-based and supportive, and I utilize tools from Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to help clients heal and grow. I welcome LGBTQ+ individuals, and especially LGBTQ+ parents. I got my Masters in Social Work at UC Berkeley in 2004, and became licensed in 2010.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

In our first session, we'll take some time to talk about what led you to schedule an appointment with a therapist, and what you are looking to get out of therapy (that can be specific goals, or a more vague thoughts that we'll work together to clarify). This will also be a chance for you to share any questions or concerns you have about therapy.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I have always had the ability to connect with a wide variety of people, and make people feel supported and safe. I am able to work with individuals to increase self-esteem, and lower symptoms of depression and anxiety. I gently push clients to explore where their thoughts and feelings come from, to better understand themselves and to find compassion for themselves. I help clients find the necessary motivation to make healthy changes.

My treatment methods

Strength-Based

My training is grounded in a strengths-based approach. I find it to be really psychologically powerful to remind people of their strengths. In my 20 years of experience, I have found that almost all of us minimize the things we do well. Profound healing and increased contentment can come from appreciating and owning your own abilities.

Supportive

It is my goal to create a warm and supportive environment, in which clients feel safe to share both their challenges and strengths.

Motivational Interviewing

I have had specific training in motivational interviewing, and use its techniques regularly with clients who face medical challenges and struggle with behavior change. It's relatively easy for people to learn what they are supposed to do to feel better. However, it's MUCH harder to actually do those things, and the tools in motivational interviewing help people bridge the gap from considering a change to actually making that change.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I utilize techniques from CBT to help clients recognize harmful thought patterns, understand what is behind those thoughts, and make the internal changes to healthier thinking, and better overall emotional health.
