I am Jean-Jeffrey Marcellus, DNP, PMHNP-BC, AGNP-BC, NRCME, a Doctoral prepared Board Certified Psychiatric Mental Health & Adult Nurse Practitioner who has over 10 years of experience in Adult Health and Addiction Medicine. I specialize in the treatment of substance use disorders using Medication Assisted Treatment. I focus on the treatment of ADHD, mood disorders, insomnia, and pain. I have extensive experience in treating individuals who are seeking assistance in their recovery journey from: Alcohol, Benzodiazepine, Opiates, Heroin, Kratom, and other Pain Medications. I work hard to create customized and personalized plans to support each of my patients’ sobriety journey. I understand the challenges that patients face in accessing healthcare, especially during the pandemic when I honed my skills in telemedicine to ensure that I can make care accessible for my patients. I am culturally sensitive, enabling me to serve a diverse patient population.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

In our initial meeting, my priority is to gather a comprehensive history from you, allowing me to understand your background, experiences, and current concerns fully. This process provides you with a platform to express how you're feeling and articulate your expectations regarding mental health care. I create a safe and non-judgmental space where you can openly share your thoughts, emotions, and aspirations. By actively listening to your needs and goals, I can tailor our therapeutic approach to best meet your unique requirements and provide the support and guidance you seek on your mental health journey.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

As a provider, I believe my greatest strengths lie in my down-to-earth demeanor and my empathetic approach, which allow me to connect with individuals on a personal level and create a sense of understanding and validation. I am committed to providing bespoke care tailored to each person's unique needs and concerns, recognizing that one size does not fit all in healthcare. My active listening skills enable me to truly hear and empathize with my patients, fostering open communication and building trust. I approach care from a holistic perspective, considering not only the physical aspects but also the emotional and social dimensions of well-being. By creating a judgment-free and safe environment, I aim to empower individuals to share openly and engage actively in their healthcare journey with confidence.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I incorporate cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) into my practice by conducting thorough assessments, educating clients about the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and teaching them to identify and challenge negative thought patterns. Through techniques such as thought records, behavioral activation, and behavioral experiments, clients learn coping skills to manage distressing emotions and engage in activities that counteract depression or anxiety. Homework assignments reinforce learning, and relapse prevention strategies help clients maintain progress. A collaborative and empathetic approach, combined with regular monitoring and feedback, ensures tailored interventions and fosters lasting change in clients' mental health and well-being.

Motivational Interviewing

I incorporate motivational interviewing (MI) into my practice through fostering a collaborative and empathetic relationship with clients to explore their motivations for change, resolve ambivalence, and empower them to make meaningful behavioral changes. By eliciting and amplifying "change talk," exploring ambivalence, and developing a discrepancy between current behaviors and desired goals, MI helps clients recognize their own reasons for change and build confidence in their ability to succeed. Through supporting self-efficacy, addressing resistance with empathy, and collaboratively developing action plans, MI guides clients towards concrete steps for change while reinforcing commitment and celebrating progress. Regular follow-up sessions allow for feedback, adjustments, and ongoing support, facilitating sustained behavior change and improved outcomes.
