Hi! My name is Moriah E. McCarthy. I am a licensed mental health counselor that believes in a holistic and blended approach with respect for the mind-body-spirit connection. Mental health is a pivotal component of all wellness. Treatment with me blends the exploration of the past and the deepening of insight with more concrete interventions and a forward-focused momentum. I use psycho-education and skills-building to empower clients to support themselves after counseling. Strengths and weaknesses are brought forward to integrate thoughts, feelings and actions into the whole self. I believe in collaborating with clients throughout the process. Clients feel supported and also challenged to take responsibility for their own success. When you work with me, I hope that we partner in your treatment. I value your feedback, appreciate you opening to possibilities, and taking action for greater stability. My approach is best described as client-centered and creative.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

The first session is the least fun much of the time. I ask questions and check through the intake information clients provided. Clients can prepare by thinking about what they want to get out of therapy. Focusing on goals and the support needed make all the questions worthwhile. Clarifying this is important in the first session.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

My biggest strength is being able to draw on the client's subjective framework to tailor interventions in a way the resonates for clients. I welcome culture, spiritualism, and values into clinical work.

My treatment methods

Existential

The Existential approach to therapy honors a clients framework asking them to align with who they want to be. The Self is the totality of our nature seeking to express itself. The impact of the past is recognized but the emphasis is on present and future choices. Interpersonally, these principles continue. Existentialism focuses on values and the generation of meaning. This works perfectly with foundational wellness concepts like healthy personal boundaries and looking at our intra- and inner-personal narrative. It links well with positive psychology and interventions that create greater and more sustained well-being.

Positive Psychology

Positive psychology is an area of the field devoted to looking at how we can sustain well-being. This is woven throughout my work so that my clients understand that the choices they make outside of therapy and how they implement their therapeutic learning can support their resilience. Investment in this science of happiness is a personal motivation in my work.
