I have my clinical license in both DC and Maryland and work with those managing conflict and trauma. A native Washingtonian, I received my bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Virginia and master’s degree in social work from the University of Maryland at Baltimore. I spent the bulk of my career working with biological and foster parents by securing permanency via reunification, adoption, or independent living. I was the clinical director of a program which provided in-home services to families at-risk of abuse and/or neglect to strengthen and stabilize them so they would be diverted from the child welfare system. I was a contractor with an organization in which I facilitated 10-week grief groups for those impacted by homicide following my certification as a grief recovery specialist. I then became the supervisory social worker in a non-public school for students diagnosed with learning differences, emotional challenges, ADHD, and/or autism. I am the Founder and CEO of Kayla’s Village, begun in July 2007, which strives to be the premier provider of innovative seminars and supportive resources for individuals, families, professionals, and communities. Additionally, I am a clinician providing therapy to individuals and couples, am on the Advisory Board of the Center for Infant and Child Loss, and teach at Trinity Washington University. I am an active church member of Trinity AME Zion Church and published author, Mommie’s Bright Sunshine, speaking to the reality that we CAN move beyond our trials, tragedies, and trauma without allowing it to define our future. I am the parent of two children, one by adoption and one by birth, and have hosted two exchange students. Obviously, I try to tailor my life to help others in need.
In our first session together, here's what you can expect
During our intake session, I work ask pointed questions to that the best treatment plan may be developed. The following sessions will be more "clinical" as that is when the actual work will begin. I would be honored for you to allow me to be a part of your healing journey. As I want to help you to get what you need as quickly as possible, when you are ready to terminate or pause sessions, I will support that as you are the expert of your life.
The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions
My biggest strengths are my engagement, humor, compassion, non-judgmental approach, and empathy. I have cared for children not born to me, so I know how it is to incorporate others into your life. I, too, have experienced significant grief so I use my trauma to connect to pain my clients may be experiencing. I encourage my clients to share openly so that we can learn and grow from one another.
The clients I'm best positioned to serve
I work best with individual and couples. If I feel I am not the best fit for you clinically and as an ethical provider, I will state that openly and work to connect you with someone who is more specialized to address your unique needs.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I have been trained in CBT as well as Motivational Interviewing and other therapeutic modalities. I take more than the required number of continuing education units to renew my license as I am interested in staying well-versed and enhancing my knowledge so that I may help my clients as quickly as possible whereby Solution-Focused Brief Therapy is utilized.
