Hi there, my name is Shirley Summers, as a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) with over 10 years of experience my approach to therapy is multilayered. Individuals who seek therapy often have lost a sense of hope and my goal is to reestablish that hope. Therapy is not one size fits all, therefore I utilize various approaches, CBT, distress tolerance skills, Motivational Interviewing, Mindfulness, trauma informed care with a strengths based slant. We will work on how to breakthrough emotional challenges, achieve goals and enjoy life. I am experienced in working with adults who experience anxiety, depression, relational conflicts, difficult life transitions and addiction.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

I like to create a warm and safe environment for clients to come to and feel safe. A back and forth dialogue regarding client expectations, wants, needs and desire, a frank conversation about why therapy and why now. My approach is compassionate, strengths based and personalized. Together we create an environment where you can explore and overcome obstacles in order to grow and heal. We will spend most of the first session going over important parts of your life and finding out what you would like to work on. We will establish some goals for therapy together.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I have a love for helping others, with good powers of observation and evolved listening skills. My style includes patience, trust and respect, with a little bit of humor. Working in collaboration with the client to come up with the best approach that makes the client comfortable and safe and will produce the best outcome. I use supportive therapy with active listening.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

CBT assists the client identifying core values that may not served them well. After completing a session a client can continue processing information by completing a journaling assignment or self care plan.

Motivational Interviewing

Motivational interviewing is helpful to assist the client to identify their level of motivation to change and identify the discrepancies in their goals and behavior. Motivational interviewing techniques build empathy and create open-ended conversation
