Adult feeling stuck? Trauma from your childhood or relational issues affecting your peace, happiness, success? OR Adolescent needing someone safe to talk to about hard stuff (and celebrate the fun stuff too!:)? OR Is your school aged child having a hard time with things at school, either interpersonally, intrapersonally, or academically? Two of my specialties are 1) Using 20 years of experience as a teacher, school counselor/administrator, and mental health counselor in the school setting to work with kids, adolescents, and parents for a more positive experience in whatever area they feel is problematic, AND 2) Helping adults heal childhood trauma and move forward in an empowering manner. (In person only for children under 13)

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

In our first session, we will share introductions. I will work to build a trusting, nonjudgmental, safe space for you to share your story. It is also important that I possess the skills and tools to help with your specific needs. After our brief introduction, I'll share the informed consent and review some of the basics of the platform. Next, I'll ask you what leads you to seek therapy and give you the opportunity to share more about yourself, and your therapy goals. I'll tell you about my experience/skillset and whether or not I feel like I'm a good match for your needs/goals. If we agree that we're a good match, we will schedule the next session. If either of us feels you'd be better suited with another therapist, I'll offer a referral if you wish, or you may continue your search. The therapy process is hindered if the therapist/client aren't a good match. You should have peace of mind with me, or whomever you choose for your care, therefore, if you feel that I am not the right fit for you, please don't hesitate to say so. Therapists are professionals and understand this is critical to their effectiveness as your counselor. The second (sometimes third) session, is information gathering and creating your unique treatment plan.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I think one of my greatest strengths as a therapist is listening with unconditional positive regard. When in session with me, I work hard to create a safe environment so you can be vulnerable and completely yourself. Having worked with children, adolescents, parents, women, and colleagues for many years, I have gained experience in helping clients identify faulty thinking patterns that may lead to undesired feelings and/or behaviors, feeling stuck, and maladaptive skills, usually from trauma and attachment. Once we identify those things, we can correct thoughts and create adaptive behaviors and skills moving forward. If need be, we can back into early childhood to heal and bring clarity to parts of the past that may be problematic now.

My treatment methods

Positive Psychology

While healing trauma and learning adaptive coping strategies is extremely important in the therapeutic process, focusing on the positive with my clients is also an important part of healing and leading a happy, fulfilling life. Trauma often causes us to believe what has happened is our fault, which creates negative inner speech, therefore poor outcomes to our self-worth and mental health. While working through the hard stuff, the use of positive psychology is a welcome balance. Positive psychology helps clients realize and focus on the positive aspects of their life and how to address the aspects that don't feel so positive in a healing, empowering manner.

Attachment-based

Feel stuck?!?! Many adults reach a point in the adult phase of life that they just feel stuck. There is a reason for this! All adults have experienced life from the lense of an infant, child, and adolescent. During these phases of life, there is real or perceived attachment, abandonment, trauma, and faulty narratives that live within our body and mind until they're brought to consciousness and addressed. These life experiences drive many thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in adulthood; some of which are adaptive and functional (increased Faith, exercising, meditating, confidence, etc..), while others are maladaptive and not functional (substance abuse, anger, co-dependence, low self-worth, etc..) , causing havoc or stress in a client's life. Taking a client back to their earliest memories, and working forward paying close attention to all the details and working to resolve things as we go is a part of the inner child work I do with clients who wish to do so. Connecting with your inner child can be a very powerful and liberating experience for my clients.

Sandplay

I use Sandtray therapy to help clients of all ages process emotions and trauma. Often times there are things within that we can't put words to, the Sandtray allows clients to express their inner world in a safe and symbolic manner.
