I began training to be a psychotherapist 15 years ago after having worked in publishing for many years. Becoming a Social Worker and helping others has always been a kind of calling for me, but it took a little while for me to arrive at my goal. I hope that that part of my story helps to prove that it is never too late to change or to pursue goals. I continue to integrate the things that I have learned through formal education and through my own experiences of life so that I am best able to help others who are experiencing distress and difficulties with navigating life. We all need additional support from time-to-time, especially given the complicated, fast-changing world we live in. My goal as a psychotherapist is to be a source of support and assistance as you develop insight into the difficulties you face and as you begin to develop strategies for change. Through interactive-therapy sessions, I help you to understand and clarify life’s challenges and I support you as you begin to make the changes that are needed to make progress towards your goals. I help my clients to discover and explore a positive path in therapy that they can then continue to follow as they pursue their goals and their lives independently.

Currently I am only accepting new clients who are trans. I am a trans and queer Licensed Clinical Social Worker and artist with 13 years of experience in community mental health. My approach is that all people deserve to have the opportunity to experience a safe, kind, and welcoming space to explore their mental health, and that as a therapist, it is my job to nurture that. I am driven to create therapeutic opportunities for people who want and need them within the LGBTQ2IA+ community. I am open to working with clients that find themselves in need of an understanding, compassionate, and community-oriented therapist who will help to guide them through healing work. My areas of focus are: LGBTQ2IA+ and TGNC youth and emerging adults, major life transitions, trauma, depression, anxiety, grief, ADHD, gender dysphoria, and sexual identity exploration. I completed my Master of Social Work (MSW) and Master of Arts in Gender Studies (MA) degrees concurrently at Loyola University Chicago. Before entering graduate school, I worked in multiple positions focused on reproductive justice, body autonomy, and community care. My life and professional experiences have led me to provide therapy with a focus on community care through an anti oppressive lense. I understand that helping one person can have a positive impact on the greater community surrounding them. I believe that treatment approaches should fit the individual's needs and thus I utilize many modalities, including cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, mindfulness, somatics, and narrative therapy. My approaches of curiosity and kindness create a welcoming space to engage in therapy. Choosing to work with a therapist is a powerful way to help yourself and we all deserve a chance to have focused time to explore, learn, and grow through challenges.

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a Doctorate in social work from Loyola University. I have over ten years of experience working with people from diverse backgrounds in both medical and mental health settings. Whether you are struggling to establish a new normal in the face of shifting life circumstances, coping with a long-standing physical or mental illness, feeling the strain of caring for a loved one with an illness or a disability, or simply feeling blocked on your path to fulfillment, you deserve a space dedicated to your needs. The pandemic and the mounting influence of social media has increased feelings of isolation and eroded our sense of genuine connectedness. Negative beliefs about oneself and fears related to past traumas can also hinder our ability to stay connected to those most important to us. My goal is to help you build and maintain the healthy connections that help us feel whole. I strive to create a space where anyone can feel welcome, and I believe that therapy is a pursuit from which everyone could derive a benefit.

If you have seen the movie “Groundhog day” starring Bill Murry as Phil, you would say it is a comedy. But it is more. He finally breaks out of his dull, repetitive life not by changing his surroundings or anyone else; he changes himself. Just like Phil, if you don’t change something, nothing will change. That is the purpose of counseling: to help you try something different, to change something about yourself, to help you become the best YOU. Whether you are in a tough spot or just have issues you want to address, getting an outside viewpoint can help. I am a licensed clinical counselor and a licensed marriage and family counselor. Hi. I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) and a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC). I want perspective clients to know I genuinely care about the people I work with, and have a passion for joining people on their journey to a new self. The fact that you are searching for a therapist shows you would like something to change. This is very brave. We often lose perspective about situations and how we deal with them. This can be a result of things we have buried from our past, or relationships that did not support us in the way we need. I will give you a safe and supportive place to look at your unwelcome patterns and find a way to make your journey more fulfilling. My counseling focus is on adolescents and adults. My philosophy is client-centered, Mindfulness based, trauma informed, and goal oriented. I have training and experience with Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), and Mindfulness. My areas of focus include trauma, attachment issues, difficulties with distress tolerance and emotional regulation, along with families dealing with Alzheimer's. Your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are what make you who you are. As we work together to understand these parts of you, we will find a way to alter those thoughts that no longer work for you and strengthen those that are helping you become who you wish to be.

I work with clients experiencing relationship challenges, interpersonal difficulties, marriage conflicts and individuals with stress, depression, and anxiety. Clients need space to be heard, feel validated and challenged in a safe environment. My goals for clients are to aid them in finding internal resources that can help them be at peace with their own challenges as well as to help them in their relationships with others. Couples’ work is focused on finding areas to increase satisfaction, finding areas of need within yourself, and learning to communicate those needs to your partner. By increasing positive responses in your relationship, you will develop more commonality and shared goals which can lead to positive outcomes. Often, people get stuck in a rut and need support in navigating their way back to a positive relationship with themselves and others. I am trained in marriage, family, and trauma, a Certified Family Trauma Professional and an EMDR trained clinician. I have worked with aging adults, end of life issues, and grief. As a therapist who is also in recovery from multiple conditions, I am not afraid to share my humanity to better reach my clients. One of the worst feelings is to feel unreachable, and I have found that a little quid pro quo can go a long way in breaking down some of the tallest barriers. Many clients may harbor some fear or anxiety about beginning therapy, so if I can be "hospitable" in any way, I think it shows my clients from the beginning that I care about their comfort.

Let's work together! *** Please schedule appointments on the hour (i.e. 3:00, 4:00 etc.) and not on the half hour (i.e. 3:30, 4:30 etc.) or at the 15 or 45 minute times (i.e. 3:15 or 3:45 etc.) Thank you for your understanding as we work to improve the scheduling platform.***

Welcome, I am a psychotherapist who received my training at the University of Chicago. I work with individuals and couples. I work collaboratively with clients who establish a relationship built on trust, authenticity and respect, which honors personal uniqueness and fosters reverence for one’s life. My practice includes those wishing to address anxiety, depression, grief and loss, spiritual concerns, loneliness, relationship issues, LGBTQ issues, PTSD, trauma, emotional and sexual abuse as well as life transitions and vocational discernment. In the context of a relationship marked by empathy, openness, and a measure of humor, I work collaboratively as a therapeutic ally, supporting clients’ personal healing and evolution. While I draw on contemporary psychodynamic and humanistic perspectives, and skills derived from CBT, ACT, mindfulness and contemplative practices, my approach is essentially person-centered. I also am trained and certified in EMDR from Francine Shapiro's EMDR Institute and in the FLASH technique from Philip Manfield. Being a composer and jazz guitarist, I have spent many years counseling musicians, artists and other creatives interested and involved in the arts. My background in the arts and music in particular, has become a metaphor to what I provide as a therapist since I have found the most beneficial therapy is analogous to the dialogue inherent in music, involving a soulful conversation that opens up new possibilities for wholeness, self-love, understanding, creativity, relationships and personal growth.

Do you ever get caught off guard by a feeling that seems to come out of the blue? In some cases, you can "power through it" and not let it impact you too much, but other times it seems to paralyze you. In these times of paralysis, a little voice shows up and says "You shouldn't be feeling that way" or some version of "toughen up". While these ideas seem good in theory, they just don't take into account these feelings that are present. Emotions can and do at times impact our ability to make decisions with confidence. While this is a natural human experience, it is something that we can change and become more effective at. This is where I come in. I am here to join you in your corner. You have already started your journey towards healing simply by finding my profile and considering making a change in your life. While talking about feelings isn't always the most enjoyable thing to do, it can be a very rewarding and life changing process. Please consider taking this next step of your journey with me. We can create a plan centered around your needs and if we learn that the current plan isn't working, we will find alternative solutions.

I work to provide a safe, non-judgmental, culturally safe space where you can share, we can identify what isn't working, and implement the best practice interventions that work toward your goals. Curiosity about why we do what we do is helpful when we need to create different habits. Therefore we work on cultivating a sense of curiosity so we can learn how to identify what isn't working in our life anymore. When we are open to new possibilities, we reduce self-imposed limitations to improve our own life experiences. When we strengthen what we are already good at, we reduce the impact of our life challenges. When we integrate newly learned skills with existing skills, we tend to feel more hopeful about our future and increase our self-confidence. These changes can lead to adopting new ways of coping, learning how to view our challenges from new perspectives and using all of this to live your best life.

Frequently asked questions

Why filter by Illinois rather than a city like Chicago?

When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in the state. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across Illinois from Rockford to Springfield! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in Illinois.

Will my therapist take insurance?

When booking you’ll be asked to verify with your Member ID. However, if you don’t have any of the insurances available you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

How does the Specialty Filter work? Can I find a therapist that focuses on a specific issue?

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need.

What are the "Clients say I'm" badges?

Grow Therapy asks patients about their experience with therapists after they have had a certain number of sessions. After enough responses, we add those characteristics to their profiles to help you find the best online therapists for you. We're still working on collecting this information from all our therapists.

Why use Gender, Age, and Identities filters?

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

What to expect during your first session?

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs.

Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
